AmigaOS Workbench Distributions On V4page  1 2

Hi there!

AmigaOS 3.1 has plenty of "preinstalled" distributions, similar to the CoffinOS.  Eventually, I will try to check and install all of them, on my Vampire V4 Standalone board.  The list includes:

- ClassicWB
- Amiga in a Box
- AmiKit 68k (AK Real)
- AmigaSYS

Did anyone try this successfully, yet?  I spoke with Jan from AmiKit lately and He said He's not far from optimizing AmiKit on Vampire (He owns one, too).

But to date, those distributions are shared in a variety of different formats (ie. HDF, ISO or even EXE), making them difficult to install without the help of WinUAE.  In addition, typical install procedure (ie. ClassicWB, AmiKit) requires AmigaOS 3.1 / 3.9 CD or ISO mounted at some point.  This all make it more difficult to handle altogether.

Anyone?  Any progress planned from the Team?

AmiKit XE for Vampire release surpasses it all (this is just my opinion).

Feature that it can check OS and use it for install is crucial also and has a proper installer like you wish.

Problem is OS 3.1 cannot be sold with Vamp (OS 3.5, OS 3.9 only in as availiable) due to ongoing Hype/Cloanto war so while all mentioned is free software, its needed basis is a bit of trouble.

Optionally Hypes OS 3.1.4 is a bit shady, but none of mentioned enhancements is included, or planned even for OS 3.2.

What's the problem?  If Cloanto retains rights to OS 3.1, Cloanto gets royalties from OS 3.1 sales.  If it's granted to Hyperion, Hyperion will get the money.

So i sincerely don't understand at all, why legal IP dispute may cause problem in sales of any IP good...

If you wish "default OS" and not users choice, it matters. You have to side to sign with.

Distributors will sell you OS of your likings and install whatever you request/pay.

It will be great to have AmiKit XE and it will be my choice, alongside OS 3.9

I vote for the status which allows for purchasing of ANY AmigaOS variant (in bulk or separately), on solid or digital media.

I think the freeze of sales of ie. OS3.9 is very bad, as this is the only way out of "legalizing" the CoffinOS.

Hope this sales shortage gets worked out very soon...

And AmiKit - You're right, it is probably the best WB bundle among all!  Even if this gets payable (aside WB and OSes it relies upon, separately), I will be eager to buy a copy!!

First pic on FB

AmiKit XE is a payable product - but well deserved!
If only OS files were free or cheap, they would be included, and AmiKit upgrades it in so many levels it shows Amiga Community OS effort.

Its 29.95E Windows or macOS or Linux, 49.95E for all 3 vers and 89.95E Full pack with FlowerPots on USB 32GB Stick which shines

I ll try talking Jan to, would gladly pay the card Price and profit.

Providing bare cloanto os3.1 would spreda up install, while leaving od 3.5,os 3.9, os 3.1.4 upgrade path inside updater would be Nice.

Gui to Vcontrol would be handy, core updater like in Coffin.

Inclusion of Riva, Netsurf, Vcontrol, Golden crown demo, vampire Is Born anim, Igora world vamp premiere HD video with dubs and 1942 ammx would be Nice

And auto updater to vamp stuff.

    If not immediate, in updates

  Nice AmiKit XE promo

Alas, what about others?

Amiga in a Box comes with exe (Win) installer.
ClassicWB after unzipping, comes with HDF.
AmigaSYS comes with HDF too.

How to install the said distributions?  Even if DD (disk-dupe) works with the HDFs, the install prompts for AmigaOS 3.1 files.  So unless microSD is enabled in V4SA (could serve for another drive, having OS3.1/3.9 files), there's no option to install these.

Unless of course, the authors provide separate distribution for V4SA any time soon.

Which I sincerely hope.

Yes, they should have some advanced mechanism.

My best idea is first to use them in WinUAE and simply .lha pack (leech :) files and copy them back to Amiga / Vamp SD Card properly formatted to bootable Amiga partition. Other ideas?

Classic owners can boot from WB floppy.

In my mind 512mb backup ROM space could be used as minimal AROS or Cloanto OS 3.1 + e.g. ClassicWB drive :)

Clearly XE has an upper hand!

Also, beside being smaller and lighter (AmiKit XE Plus could offer customized install too?) I dont see any advanced distro functionality to XE in any aspect. Please enlighten.

Seen ClassicWB on my A1200 020/28 but I believe XE has icon change.

AmiKit 8.x is simply way older then updated 11 :)

I think we should modernize the Amiga and install the OS, any OS, from CD or USB like with PC windows. Using only the Amiga and not the UAE and not floppies.

AmiKit XE USB + any licensed OS bundled + some USB hub and boot support on V4 could in future do exactly that.

AmiKit has fine foundation, needs just OS-KS files.

Amikit is based on 3.9

Where do you want to get all the 3.9 licenses?

No, its a "almost standalone layer" - needs OS files, but essentially builds on them. It can work with/upgrade from:

    AmigaOS XL CD or ISO
AmigaOS 3.9 CD or ISO (also available in Amiga Forever from Cloanto, including required Kickstart ROM)
    AmigaOS 3.5 CD or ISO
AmigaOS 3.1 available on AmigaOS4.1 FE CD or ISO from Hyperion Entertainment (also includes required Kickstart ROM)
AmigaOS 3.1.4 ZIP from Hyperion Entertainment (also includes required Kickstart ROM)

  * * *

Internally, it has options "to upgrade" to OS 3.5,OS 3.9 or OS 3.1.4, if you installed OS 3.1

I, for example, can provide Amiga dealers with OS 3.5 and OS 4.1  or AF CD/ISO

Good point.  Supposedly now, 3.9 licences are unreachable anywhere.  Hope this is temporal shortage and they will be available anytime soon.

Besides, Coffin is also based on 3.9.

I am pretty lucky I got mine (CD) from Vesalia on August.

I would like the Vampire, also the V2+ to allow, at power on, to have a device to install the operating system.

It will be so (boot and then you could click install if its has AmigaOS installer or boot to OS), if two conditions are met:

  a) Inserted device is bootable on AmigaOS (FFS,SFS etc. with boot flag)

  b) User has defined in HDToolBox or early boot up menu that this device has highest boot priority

I agree as of 2020 an overhall of KS including some boot menu key or menu would be great.

Best second community solution until then seems to be VampireBoot
EXTERNAL LINK    but it has not been developed quite a while. It allows PFS and FAT16/32 which means it could boot AROS, FreeMINT, Linux and even MOS if it existed for m68k. And can boot SDCard since it mounts device not present in ROM (Could Remused 1MB ROM solve this kind of issues?)

Right. I forgot to mention I will warmly welcome any 68k Linux partition also, on my V4SA!!

Aside Linux, forgot to mention there’s more:

- BestWB (based upon WB 3.1.4)
- BetterWB (based upon WB 3.1)

Me too, Only ucLinux might have a chance, until MMU issue is fixed or Linux m68k kernel that uses V2/V4 PMMU is done. None is on to do list yet.

I kinda see them as pacthed basic OS, but something like

  AmiKit XE based on OS 3.5 BB2 / OS 3.9 BB2
  OS 3.1.4u1 with BestWB
  AROS m68k
  FreeMINT
  ucLinux (xperimental)

  Would be my thing :)
