Would SETI be possible on the Vampire?

Been running it for years on my PC, just chugs along in the background until i launch a game.

You would need something like EXTERNAL LINK setup beforehand or setup a cross-compiler environment.

This is the current porting page:
EXTERNAL LINK
I'll try to see if I can get it to build (chances are slim), considering the dependencies for the BOINC client.

See here:
EXTERNAL LINK
And here:

(sorry about my incessant editing)

Every other computer platform has SETI, would be cool when the Amiga could join.

Evan if it took a while.

Ah yes, i suppose my statement would be taken either way regarding what SETI are up to.

Would be cool though, Alien life confirmed on an Amiga.

In the late 90's at work we ran Seti on all the OS/2 machines... so why not Amiga?

But why? I bet they already have what they need in the form of computers on the SETI program

Does anyone really need a rational reason?

It came out in 1999, it was often ran on early pentium models, it ran on Win95,OS/2 and Linux machines with 16MB of ram...

But still why not? If someone wants to and it could be done, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't happen. Hell we're running Classic Amigas in 2018 and Seti is all the suddenly the line of absurdity?

It’s weird, yes... what, you’re gonna contact alien inteligence? Do you have an antenna?

Come on now, there’s a huge difference to retro gaming and the love for a classic system by those who grew up with it (and there’s a lot of us)

Running SETI would need you more than just the software, and if you have a vampire, knock yourself out. Try to port it if you feel like it

I don't feel the need to run seti at all honestly, it's just your comments are not constructive and just stifling someone's effort to run something different than what was originally intended on the Amiga.. much like mpeg video, web browsers and everything else we're running on these classic Amigas that we couldn't before thanks to the Vampire.

It's SETI@Home to be precise. No, you don't need an antenna and you do not contact aliens from your home computer ;) You download some radio telescope data to analyze and then upload it back to the project HQ. Same as you can do with helping "fold" some "proteins" by running a small client software on your home computer to help progress on the cancer and Ebola cure. TBH it makes me a little bit sad to hear this slightly ignorant tone on your part, Mr Mallagan...

Running SETI@Home on an Amiga is about as practical as setting up a 3D render farm built out of Commodore 64's.  It would be an absurd waste of time.

Except performance wise the vampire isn't too much different than the hardware seti@home was originally designed for.

Yes, and the Vampire performs like a system from 20 years ago, so my statement still stands and it would be just as absurd a waste of time to run SETI@Home today on an i486 PC running Windows 98 using period binaries.  In case you haven't noticed, the SETI project has moved on to more advanced code that uses CUDA and massive parallelism....all to avoid absurd wastes of time.  But if you're into wasting time and electricity, then knock yourself out and drag your 20+ year old system out of the closet and have a blast (if you can even find SETI binaries that old)....or set up that 3D render farm you've always wanted with the 1,000 Commodore 64's you have stashed in your basement.

My, my, my, I bet your mother would be real proud of your language.

What makes you think I care what people do with their Amigas?  I honestly don't care, but I do refuse to accept the idea of running SETI binaries from 20+ years ago on a system that performs like it's 1998 is a good idea.  Based on your lack of vocabulary and most likely a lack of education as well, you must think it's a great idea.  All I can say is that you should seek higher education and an expanded vocabulary....before your mother takes a switch to your backside.

Now run along and do your best to insult someone else online with your amazing vocabulary....I'm not impressed....yawn....

Guys, guys don't be that rude to each other.
In the end we're only Amiga loving users.

I understand Steve Ferell's point but on the other hand if someone like Matthew would like to expiriment and see what his upgraded Amiga can handle, Just let it be.

We're not a homogeneous Amiga user group, each his thing :)

Just for the sake of knowledge, it could be interesting to see what a Seti setup for the Amiga would compare to the PC's back then and now :)

Remember think in the innovating and border moving spirit of the Amiga and it's founders :)

Peace in the galaxy and may the Amiga force be with you all :)
