This screenshot of Armitari looks like old day unix/linux

Yes indeed. It looks like X11 and Motif are running :)

Nah, its the XaAES that makes the windows and frames.

Then a GEM App, the X-Server, is started. Unix X apps can display through that. Right now, only stuff that doesn't use text output works, the xfontserver isn't configured yet.

Stefan, I see a bash shell running, which intrigues me. Did the FreeMINT devs do something special to get it to compile?

I've looked at the source code on EXTERNAL LINK , but I can not seem to find much directly related to bash.

FreeMiNT is only the kernel. Other tools are elsewhere.

Most command-line GNU/Linux software can compile out of the box with GCC for FreeMiNT. Some of them require minor patching, mainly in configure scripts. Example of bash there:

If you don't know FreeMiNT, you probably come close to think of it as a very simple *NIX incarnation. Most system calls are there, it's basically just the virtual memory abstraction that's missing. Comparable to µCLinux, functionality-wise.

All the original TOS system calls (that pretty much resemble MS/DOS functionality) are still there (so normal GEM/TOS programs continue to run), but you have the rich *NIX feature set available additionally.

This makes porting (simple) Unix/Linux applications very straightforward. For simpler applications (that do not mess with virtual memory like mmap() etc.), this is sometimes not more than just a "configure;make;make install" triplet.

Now that you have MiNT running on Amiga you can try Atari Netsurf port. But I guess you cant use ethernet on amiga? Still you can try localy and campare with Amiga version :)

Thanks Uros, Netsurf 2.9 does exist for FreeMINT!

Yes. But why not try version 3.7?

Network is working on Amitari FreeMiNT?

The network itself (TCP/IP stack is included, opensource and doesn't nag ;-) ) is there, but no network hardware driver.

Theroetically you could set up a  webserver and browse a locally served webpage.

Apache is available (quite old version just like almost all RPM packages are, sadly)

Take a look at EXTERNAL LINK
And then the netsurf build currently installed needs FPU.
I'll try to get an 68000 build if possible.

Hope team will provide or work with Atari boys on v4 LAN driver. Other Classics have other net solutions, so help here might be needed.

To Stefan: can you please include 100% working software with the distro (ApolloOS style :-) so no miss and try by users. Surely, users could report here new discoveries and tricks to be included.

I am not sure will v2.7 core v2 FPU be enough to run Atariesque FPU software, we ll se about that, but hope v4 hard FPU will be enough, openning a bit more gates to Amitari.

While Atari guys have FireBee as Vampire alternative, just like with MacOS Classic (and even m68k Linux and AROS), more options, merrier the life is.

Is there some AtariTOS/GEM/Mint ROM that could help kicking the partition without floppy once mapROM feature is ready?

Very impressive. Another kitchen in the growing Vampire belt.
