V4 Release and Drivers

Reading some recent threads on Amigaworld and lately there has been a lot of grumbling about the continued lack of drivers, both on the X1000 and the X5000.

I hope there is a big push underway to ensure the V4 doesn't end up in the same boat... great hardware let down by missing/incomplete drivers.

To me that means support for the basic USB peripherals (keyboard, mouse, storage, hubs), Ethernet, DMA IDE, and MicroSD.

If some of these drivers are missing or developing too slowly is this something that can be solved by some sort of bounties?

Sorry if this comes across as too pushy but it would be disappointing to see the V4 held back in the long run by driver issues.

I'd like to mention Wi-Fi too. There was talk of a Wi-Fi add-on for the V500V2+ but I don't recall seeing it yet. Again I don't want to seem pushy either just thought I'd mention it.

Yeah, I ve been waiting for my onboard x1000 driver since at least 2012. Best one can get is Stevens "when done" promise EXTERNAL LINK
Beside core tweaking, that is what Apollo team does.
Even SAGA drivers are 6 month old, I suppose new core release
will bring faster and updated drivers too. I am glad here its one unified pack.

USB, Ethernet ... is more V4 Standalone thing, and I am sure these will be ready by the time. Unlike x1000.

I understand your fears, not the same product, not the same people.

Although not always communicated in a way that is clear to all, I believe the team would be more than happy to get some help from the community with driver development.

They are just a small team and are already putting more man-hours into this project than anyone could ask for. They can't do it all themselves, so they focus on the stuff that they do best.

I think stuff like WiFi drivers could easily be "outsourced" to external developers. We know there is talent in the community, but people are in different situations in their lives so you need to find those who have both knowledge and the possibility to make  these priorities.

I've seen that sometimes when people come here and mention they could help, the next step is usually to talk to Gunnar on IRC. But maybe the team could also make some more official announcement about what kind of help they are looking for.

Currently I'm talking to one of the friendly chaps at Godot Engine to see if there is interest for this platform. We'll see how that goes, but anyway, other could probably do the same to spread the word and get people interested.

Surely, and not only by means of "interest". If people who know 68k arhitecture and Amiga programmers of 90s are still alive (hopefully) I dont have anything against donations and fundraising to get it done.

So far, best things i have seen, like OWB/Odyssey ports, Dopus5 going free and some AROS developments, happened that way.
