I cannot find a serial number on my board, box or manual.

The number is inside the FPGA. You can read it out from CLI with commandline tool

I have been using it with the original firmware (constantly) and know this is bad.

I would update.

I really would like to update it but am afraid of "bricking it".

You can always reflash it with a USB Blaster.

I don't have a USB Blaster.

I'll try and use the command line tool tonight. I have things in pieces at the moment as I'm re-capping and replacing the vidiot. I'm pleased that I'm not looking for a serial on the box or board. That worried me greatly. Thanks. :)

Yes you can use the command line tool.

Nevertheless, I would recommend everyone to get a USB-Blaster, its a very inexpensive tool and in case something goes wrong with the commandline update, you can always reflash using the blaster
