Hi,

How do I turn off drive cache in Apollo OS R6 ?
There is something like smartdrv used in the old days for MS DOS.
Is there an equivalent running in Apollo OS ?
I want to turn it off so the HDD isnt cached.

  Thanks

Please help me understand, why you want to turn it off.

Lets clarify what we talk about.

Apollo-ROM does include a READ disk cache.
This cache will highly improve your performance.
It has only benefits and I can see no reason why you would want to disable it.

Apollo OS R6 uses PFS filesystem which does delayed writes.
Apollo OS R8 uses SFS filesystem and has no delayed writes.

Some people not like the delayed writes of PFS filesystem.

SFS also to have issues on AROS 68k, some only if you use Wanderer, however even on ApolloOS on the Workbench if a file moved "in the same Path" the source file is not deleted, with PFS this does not happen. I reported in the attached link this and other AROS 68k problems to deadwood.

The PFS delay is solved by using the DiskSafe utility found on Aminet.

I just want to experiment with something.
I think read cache is causing crashes during mass file transfers.
Coffin does not use a read cache and I dont have any problems transferring 100s of files.
I have coffin and Apollo OS in bootloader and I need to get files from coffin to Apollo OS. Example the GAMES collection.
I transfer into the PERSONAL Drive then into a folder in Apollo OS.
If turning off the read cache fixes the problem people will know on this forum.
I never get crashes within coffin.
I'm using a brand new sandisk ultra CF card.
I have fastIDE set to default. (fast).
Please allow me to turn off the cache so I can try it out.

    Thanks

If you are interested,i've created two small scripts that allow you to recover "all" files deleted from the operating system by a simple click on the appropriate icon on any SFS or PFS formatted Hardisk.

The script as soon as executed will open Dopus4 with the path of the "deleted" files set, ready to facilitate copying the deleted files or to execute them.

All files that have been deleted several times will also be recovered, each of them having a different nomenclature.

The script settings recover files from the system partition, but with a small change volume name can be used for any other location, the script works on all AROS x86/68k, AMIGA OS3/OS4 and MOS Operating Systems that use these two Filesystems.

I enclose a small video tutorial that shows the above:
