Just wondering, when I open EXTERNAL LINK there is a product ready for pre-order called "Kraken". Never seen any info about.
Is it a further new planned hellmachine? :-) Dear ApolloTeam, do you wanna share some infos about?

Hi Bjorn,

Thanks for spotting this! I was doing the website update and this definitively should not be listed there yet :O

At the moment the only cards we announced are for A500/1000/2000 and A1200, not the A4000 card. They will kill me!

Thanks!!

Hi Bartek,

no matter - you're welcome. So I'll keep my mouth closed ;-)
Cheers mate

Bartek, I hope they let you live! Haha.

In all seriousness, I like these product names including the unannounced Kraken. ;) My hopes are that perhaps this one also might work inside my beloved Amiga 3000. It has the same CPU accelerator connector as the 4000, although space inside the machine is not quite the same and would have to be taken into consideration.

+1

I really hope they don't kill you, Bartek!

I've been checking in on these forums every now and then to see what's going on. But, I only created an account now because of the mention of an A4000 card. Now you've got me salivating for one of these!

I have a Vampire 600 v2, but sadly my A600 died shortly after I bought that. Since then, I've been holding out for a card to either put into my A4000, or to add to my brand new AA3000+ that Hese from Amibay is building for me.

Of course, I can't expect you guys (who I consider to be heroes) to support such exotic systems, but I'm hopeful that it'll just work because it's basically an A4000.

Thank you for all your hard work. You guys are absolute stars!

That AA3000+ is so beautiful. *sigh* Always wanted an A3000.

There are some things to watch out for with the SuperDMAC chip in the A3000/AA3000+, but otherwise it's essentially an A3000 with AGA+DSP.  So if the Apollo team makes their Kraken compatible to the A3000 then it should work on the AA3000+.  I hope they do.

Release the Kraken!!!! (sorry just had to say it :)

By the way, we've come quite far getting the DSP to work, check out the DSP thread on a1k.org.  Really amazing stuff.  (I have two AA3000+'s both with working DSP!) Amazing system and if it had come out at the time...if they had also put the DSP on the A1200 it would have been awesome.

Yes the DSP was an interesting option at their time..
But of course the coding added some complexity.

Today the AMMX of the 68080 is of course _much_ faster than the DSP
was. And the coding is much simpler from the 68080 CPU.

Yes you are right.  Even the 060 FPU can rival the 3210 DSP.  But against a 030/882 which was in the A3000 at the time it absolutely blew it away. 040 was just becoming available at the time, so most people still had 68000, 020, or 030 cpus.

  well,
DSP56000 does multiply and add instruction (24x24+56 --> 56bit register) in 2 cycles vs 5 cycles for Fmul in 68060. It means 32MHz DSP (AT&T32000 or MC 56000) can beats 50Mhz 68060.

There are other interesting DSP features like "fast interrupts" or multiple instructions in one cycle.
But IMO the main DSP feature is circular buffer (used for audio/signal filtering), where one DSP56000 instruction have to be replaced by many 68000/68080 instructions.

Have you coded the 56K yourself?
Or are you doing "handbook" comaprisons?

I think doing handbook comparison is _very_ difficult,
to quickly you can misread some numbers and this can results in totally crazy misinterpretations.

Yes the Kraken is planned for A3000/A4000

Our cards are like this

V4-VAMPIRE Standalone                (on stock)
V4-Firebird = A500/A2000/A1000      (on stock)
V4-Icedrake = A1200                  (in development)
V4-Salamander = A600                (planned)
V4-Thunderbird = CD32                (planned)
V4-Kraken = A3000/4000              (planned)

I have practical (not professional, just a hobby) coding experience with 56k.

true.
obviously 68080 is superior to any DSP from '90, but IMO in some aspects DSP still can be interesting for a coder.

Anyway, I would like to avoid stealing this thread, therefore I will post my thoughts in the thread "Idea - a New Instructions for Audio Processing"

  I can not wait !

the V4-Kraken = A3000 / 4000 will have the exact same characteristics of the V4-Firebird or for these top big boxes amiga are you going to add more like an even better FPGA, graphic SAGA resolution, sata controller onboard ...?

But above all in which quarter of 2022 do you think we will be able to buy this new V4-Kraken for our A4000 / 3000 big boxes ?! your optimistic forecast, so I start saving the two cards for myself, thank you

Yes exactly.
Our goal is to offer the same platform for _ALL_ Amigas.
Giving you the same performance and features on all systems.
We plan for Q3/2022
