V4 Standalone Would Not Power Up

Hi everyone

Encountered an odd problem this morning with the V4 Standalone - plugged everything in and it simply would not power up.

Tried another Mini USB power supply, same problem.

Took the top of the case off to see if anything had come loose inside, but everything seemed to be in place. I gave the CF card adapter a press down into its socket just in case and also made sure the RTC module was still in place. It was noticeable that after those two actions, when I next plugged the power back in, it all started to work.

I have a few theories as to what happened that I will be monitoring over the coming days.

1) There could be a bad solder joint on the board or a crack in the board somewhere (unlikely but possible)
2) The mini USB socket is defective in some way (could be a bad solder joint as above)
3) The RTC module was shorting against the top of the case (while it did not appear to be touching, the clearance between the solder joints on the top of the RTC and where the top case meets the runner it slides into is only about 1mm or so. I've put some electrical tape on the top of the RTC module to prevent this, just in case it was that).

All seems to be working again for now.

Has anyone else had an issue like this with their V4 Standalone?

Thanks
Chris

It happened again on two separate occasions last night. On both occasions it seemed to get going once I physically picked up the V4 and moved it a bit.

So on that basis, given I ruled out a defective PSU, I'm beginning to think its either:

1) A bad solder joint on either the mini USB power socket or somewhere else in the power circuit.
2) The mainboard itself is either shorting or not properly grounded against the case.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Did your cable go bad?

If you mean the power supply - no. It was the first thing I suspected, so I swapped out for another Mini USB power supply of the same spec (the cable is attached to the power supply in both cases, therefore the alternative power supply was also using a different cable, eliminating that as the point of failure), but I have been able to replicate the same issue using that different power supply.

It's very odd. So far today, no issues.

One thought - the supplied power supply included with my V4SA is only a 5v 1.5amp supply - is 1.5amp actually enough?

The V4 consumes about 2 Watt.

No issues there then as the supplied PSU is 7.5watt.
