IDE Connector and Use of Harddisk

Is it possible to use a Harddisk such as Hitachi 80 GB on the Vampire 500V2+ Connector? I do not get it to work. Only a Kingston compact flash Card of 4 gb works. First I tried a harddisk as master and a CF card as slave, but that neather worked. Then I decided to have only the harddisk with a long and short cable...again,it does not work at all. The harddisk will not be recognized after I partitionized it (<4GB parts)from the workbench. I also checked another harddisk with same behaviour. Does anyone has an idea?

CF card and Hard Drive has same interface, so, I can't see any reason that shouldn't work.
There is only one possibility. Hard drive mechanical start. Try to run Hard drive first, then start Amiga. It was known problem of some slow hard drives.

That might be very hard to accomplish - how can one start "hard drive first" on a 2.5" connector, where the drive power is provided on a IDE port itself and thus it powers the drive when the board is powered?

You will need a custom cable with the power connections wired out separately.

Sorry, I have missed something. If You use 2,5" hard drive- then, just start Amiga and perform ctrl-A-A reset, disk souldn't stop till soft-rebooting.
And here We have another clue- HDD power supply. Mayby voltage drop too low when HDD start?
Try put Your ear on disk and try to hear is working (if clicking- power too low). I can't remember correctly how is 2,5" connector designed on Amiga board, but it contain HDD power supply for sure. I still have no own Vampire and don't know Majsta add power supply for disk on Vampire. It was designed for CF cards if I'm correct.
Do "ear" test, You should understand problem.

I have been using one of this in place of a real compact flash card:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Micro-SD-SDHC-XC-TF-CF-Compact-Flash-type-I-Lecteur-de-carte-Adaptateur-HG-/201640973936?hash=item2ef2bd1670:g:FRwAAOSwtJZXV3Ot

They work very well for example if you insert x2 32gb sd cards it will show up to the amiga as a single 64gb hard drive. And is a lot cheaper than a real CF.

Ok. I will check it again. Also with a very short cable<10 cm and only one hdd and let you know. The hdd is powered on and will be recognized, but it cannot be partitionized. One partition with < 4gb I could formated then, but could not install the workbench finally as there were disk block failures...I will let you know asap.

Well, I could also use the sd card slot. HOWEVER I like the sound and feeling of a real hdd ;-)

Hi all, whether with Gold2 I got it now to work...or a virus was sitting in front of my amiga .-) Does not matter...very great job!
Now I have my hitachi 80 gb hd as master and the cf card too exchange quick data from pc to amiga as slave on a 40 cm long cable. Fantastic!!
