Review of Vampire V4 - Not Mine

Hi,

I found this review of the v4 and found it interesting. Being in the U.S., there are some interesting points. One of which is a bit of an assumption about how technically savvy most Amiga hobbyists are. For example, I was a kid when I had an Amiga and it was my father who installed all of the add-in cards and the 8MB RAM expansion.

I hope no one minds me posting this. I'm just curious what people think of it and some of the points made.

I own a Vampire for a few days now.

I enjoyed the read. Do not think cultural differences have much to do with it. The community is great. But the lack of documentation makes it difficult.

Geting a Vampire up and running is quite a journey. All in all I enjoyed it however. And I love the endresult.

Thanks for sharing.

In addition:

In AF issue 6/2019, there’s Sasha’s V4SA review.
In AF issue 1/2020, there’s my review of six FPGAs (I missed unAigs though), incl. V4SA.

Amiga Future: colour-printed Amiga magazine (bi-monthly), from Germany.

> I missed unAigs though

I meant: I missed unAmiga though.

I tried locating those issues but they are nowhere to be found. I'm sure I could try ebay though.

Great review and pretty much on point with all the benefits and challenges of the Vampire.

To be honest, what I would like to see them do is making the upgrades easy and stable like the MiSTer, we're in 2021 and using Rom flashers is so 1995.

This is why I lately posted my inquiry here:

But no one from the Team, bothered to answer.

  It was a nice read.
Its easy to see the points,at least for me,a total newbie to real Amiga-hardware I would be very depended on good manual and good community for assistance. I can only speak for myself, and my perspective on these things of course.

As a computer/tech-enthusiast I do like good old forums like these ones way more than lets say Discord. The reason is that info is easy to search, and people can find it and read it even without registering anywhere. A good forum is in my eyes an ever expanding "block chain" of a knowledge-base that for us nerds gives us hours of juicy treads to read up on. I got very deep into so many treads on this forum before I was even registered or had received the V4.

I do understand the need to also use new platforms (for chats, etc)in this modern age,but a good forum that expanding over time is still IMHO the best option for most support since again,a tread can help so many even years after last comment in it.

For me personally I`d be using this forum way more than Discord. If there is an IRC-channel for the "die-hard`s" I`d love to join that in addition. That is clearly just as an addition, because of course any subject I for some reason cant find answer to searching this forum,I`d want to make that tread so it does exist for the next one that looks for the same information.

Before I got my V4 Standalone, the only Amiga I have is an 1200,that is as plain as it gets, and it has probably never booted a OS yet,if it has been used much at all by the previous owner. So my Amiga experience is from FS-UAE in Linux, which makes my mountain climb a lot steeper than one that has had Amiga as a part of their computer-life up to this point.. For me that was also my point of getting the V4,I would need to learn a for me new system, even if I get a modern hardware, with DIGITAL-VIDEO out,SD-card option,USB. etc.

I knew when buying it that I`d end up banging my head to the keyboard trying to figure things out,but I am not shy to ask and create treads here, because someone has to be the first (and even second) to do so to make a great knowledge-base for the next "me" out there.

My experience so far with this forum has been excellent. I only needed to join discord to register for the bootloader.
The last 3 weeks I have not used my V4 because I got stuck on many things,so to continue I will have to search around, and probably start a few treads on the way. The V4 is a gift that continues to give me exactly what I hoped,a new system that is not what I`m used to.

Thanks for the link it was nice to see even Amiga-experienced users having to struggle a bit,and it seems like with coffin a lot of my challenges would be solved, but who knows,I have not even updated the core or Apollo OS yet.. maybe that even makes a difference.

Gonna go and boot it up now...
  Wish me luck...

EDIT: I could have sworn I wrote DIGITAL-VIDEO out and not "DIGITAL-VIDEO out" as it became after posted, but here in editor of my post it does say DIGITAL-VIDEO out, which makes this a very very strange situation. Is "H.D.M.I" out a "banned" term her or something? Or does it have an "auto-correct" thing attached to it?

Not that this bothered me,but found it funny, because I was thinking about it for a few days, and thought, well I could just remember wrong, maybe I did write DIGITAL-VIDEO out,but I could not believe that since I`d remember writing a that long word with CAPS.

EDIT 2. aha.. an automatic change... But why?
