Please NOT Mix Different OS Versions!page  1 2

For Vampire/Amiga different OS versions are available.

The Vampire V4 comes shipped with ApollOS.
Another very good distro according to our users is Coffin.

Please mind that for the Amiga many different kernels and OS version do exist and that mixing them will not always work.

You can compare this with the situation on the Intel PC, where different Windows Versions exists.
When you have a Windows 7 install, then mixing in system files from Windows 96 or Windows NT might also not work well, and might create a lot of problems.

For best stability please not mix files, unless you really know what you are doing.
Please not install random libs from Aminet on ApollOS, please not install P96 gfx drivers, as ApollOS uses CyberGFX.

Also for Coffin we can recommend you to use it as it.
Please not install random libs from Aminet into it, please not use another kick like 3.1.4 - unless you really know what you are doing.

Please mind that installing OS libs or changing Kernels can greatly decrease stability.

Thank you

Hi Gunnar.
I am a proud owner of a vampire 600 v2 accelerator board, but I am having trouble getting it to work again.
It was working ok with gold2.10 and Coffin R53. I tried updating to different versions of Gold (2.11,2,12,2,13rc) and Coffin(R56, R57) it would not boot, or sometimes it boots but cursor position offset.. or unstable and freeze. I then see this post about which OS to use and you mention ApollOS and Coffin as two different OS, but I thought they were the same... so my question is:
What is the official Core Gold version and OS that I should use to get it to work reliably?
Thanks a lot for all your help!

Gunnar might give the better answer, provisional one is:

0) Such freezes are usually more related to either power provided or way card is connected to CPU slot, but that is just my guess. Try different core and software solutions first, experienced Amiga repairer later.

a) Coffin is based on AmigaOS 3.9 and has better compatibility to WHDLoad titles.Seems stuck at R57 for now.
Latest Coffin is downloadable via Torrent at EXTERNAL LINK
b) ApolloOS is free, optimized and based on AROS, but its advised to use only what is included for most stable experience. AROS is not 100% AmigaOS compatible, depends on applications and games. However, its better long term and non gaming solution, as now all forces are put to it.

c) You can experiment with latest GOLD2 beta core to get most of features, but you need the Blaster since its JIC
EXTERNAL LINK  or use latest stable core provided as EXE
EXTERNAL LINK
Mind that only ECS and RTG titles will work on V600.
For WHDLoad titles, see some tips
https://wiki.apollo-accelerators.com/doku.php/software_library:compatibility

And upper statement means not that its impossible to archieve multi boot on Vampire, but not to mix different OS components, which never worked well on Amigas.

Kickstart is a bit tricky solution there since single choice must be made permanently like  using AROS one is best only for AROS, OS 3.1.4 one for it ... Luckily, you could soft flash other in case of using other OS.

Coffin is based on OS 3.9

Coffin is very polished and very stable.
Coffin comes with its own Kickstart (Kick 3.10 = read "Three.Ten")
The included 3.10 kickstart is perfect for the job.
Changing the Kickstart to a lower version would be just a very bad idea.

As you know AmigaOS ownership is unclear, and OS 3.9 can be regarded as Abandonware. Legal battles are fought since years by companies which make profits from selling you abandonware.

Our goal is revive the Amiga and getting suck into this legal battles does impose the risk to kill Amiga again.

Therefore the only way forward is start clean and APOLLOS does this.
APOLLOS is the new AmigaOS is a clean start based on Opensource AROS sources tuned and optimized for 68K.

I think APOLLOS is the way forward to revive Amiga.

Nobody to provide a link? Why, is it confidential?

Not exactly, I have seen You Tube Videos of AROS running on Vampire V500s and V1200s. Unfortunately, no explanation of how to get it up and running is mentioned. So, Yes, it seems to be Confidential :)

I believe the AROS ROM needs to be loaded, mapped, for the image to work. The CF/SD Card image alone will not boot on it's own ( I tried). It will on the V4 since the Core contains the AROS ROM image, but the V500, V600 and V1200 contains the Kickstart 3.10 ROM as part of it's core.

Some trickery is required to get AROS up and running on non-V4 Standalone Vampire cards.

I may be completely wrong about this, thus why I am looking for assistance in this matter (and don't forget about Nikos :)

It's supposed to be able to run on all Vampires.
Though I have only tested it on my V1200, which does run, but needed to be upgraded to latest core before it would boot.

So to try it i would first install latest core then try the image in the download section of the forum.

For V2 users/owners, my recommendation is to use Coffin for now.
Coffin is an excellent AmigaOS distro, maybe even the very best of all available options today.

What I can only recommend is to use Coffin like it is and not try to downgrade files in it e.g. with stuff from Kick 3.1.4. Please refrain downgrading the kickstart or mixing the workbench libraries as this can easily make the distro less stable.

V4 owners get their systems preinstalled with ApollOS.
ApollOS-kick is certainly the only AmigaOS-kick option where you can be sure thats its 100% legal to buy it. The legality of any other options, including 3.1.4 is today still doubtful.

V4 owners today have the option to also run Coffin.
I think for the future ApollOS can be better than any other AmigaOS option and will then makes good sense to use it as main OS also on all classic Amigas. For today I would V2 owners recommend to stay with Coffin.

The Startup-sequence in the image does this.  It should boot without any trickery.

But AROS is not aware of the V1200's onboard IDE.  So you would need to boot from the A1200's onboard IDE.

Excellent, I will try the A1200s onboard IDE interface.

Maybe something can be added to the installer to check if its running on ApolloOS and terminate?
