Slow Ethernet Module Speeds (Download)

Hi,

Using the ENC28J60 Ethernet Module, I am getting rather lame download speeds but the upload speeds are fine:

    From AmiSpeedTest:

    -----

    Finding closest server...

        Country: Canada
          City: Waterloo, ON
        Server: Packetworks

    Starting download test...

        100 kB in  3.119 secs = 256 kb/s
        175 kB in  5.80  secs = 276 kb/s
        262 kB in  7.482 secs = 280 kb/s
        393 kB in 10.715 secs = 293 kb/s

    Average download speed = 282 kilobit/s

    Starting upload test...

        100 kB in  1.70  secs = 748 kb/s
        350 kB in  1.398 secs = 2003 kb/s
        1225 kB in  2.825 secs = 3469 kb/s
        2450 kB in  4.857 secs = 4035 kb/s
        3675 kB in  6.797 secs = 4325 kb/s
        5512 kB in  9.753 secs = 4521 kb/s
        8268 kB in 14.373 secs = 4602 kb/s

    Average upload speed = 4203 kilobit/s

    Done!

Using my PCMCIA Wireless card, I get upload and download speeds are around 4Mbps.

I get these slow downloads speeds on both my Vampire 500 V2 and the 1200 V2. I also get random stop in data transfers as well.

Needless to say, I use my PCMCIA wireless for my Internet needs. Which in case of my Vampire 1200 V2 is sad, since I need to use the older core, PCMCIA friendly version (non-Gayle).

Any ideas on why this is happening? Any Solutions?

I have tweaked my roadshow setting and have improved it some, but I get a huge difference in download speed aswell.

Roughly 1200 kilobit/s down and 4500 kilobit/s up with amispeedtest.

So it isn't just you.

A little bit confused by this comment.
The two latest cores, both GOLD 2.12 and 2.13, have PCMCIA enabled. In fact, GOLD 2.13 has both PCMCIA, motherboard IDE and Vampire IDE all working. Since it is still in beta, you will need a USB Blaster to flash the core to your V1200. If you are getting better speeds through PCMCIA wireless, maybe you could keep using it until the team are able to look into the problem you're having.

I have not had much luck unless I use the PCMCIA cores from 2.12. I will try the other versions that you have mentioned and see if my Wireless card will function correctly.

Thanks.

UPDATE:

2.13 RC2 works fine on my Vampire 1200 V2 with my Wireless card. Not sure how I missed this. But still, it's odd that the Download Speed is much slower than the upload on the Wired Ethernet Adapter.
