Destroying MicroSD Socketspage  1 2

I need to warn everyone about recent situation.
Apparently there are some microSD adapters(extenders) who are destroying microSD sockets. Strange thing is that for some reason all of the reported failures are from Vampire 1200 users from Italy. So someone there advised everyone to use specific adapters who are too big and who are breaking pins inside socket or making shorts by bending pins. Because this happened with V1200 I can conclude that this advice is something that happened recently because it didn't happen on earlier models(V500 and V600).
I will repeat, in past 5 years I m using microSD sockets from same supplier, with same part number and before I sent each card I test everything including that socket. Then put on same socket label QC passed. This problem is not related to V1200 or socket itself, this is related to mentioned adapter and mechanical force. There is no difference with microSD sockets I use and those used in other modern devices and I know that since I have repaired many cameras and other devices lately and have seen what's inside. I can't provide more info about adapter, where is ordered, how it's looks like but from mails I receive I see that this is related to several users from Italy. All of them have same problem after they used some adapter. If someone have more info it would be good to post it here.

Yes microSD externders are bad/killers. I tried to make a sd to Ethernet cable. Destroyed my V2 slot on first insert.

Should replace it when i get the time.
Now i use the exp port instead. (was not available at the time)

It's not a problem of Italy users, we buy extenders from China as anyone else.. My v1200 sd is OK, but I will keep away from SD extenders

I didn't say that problem is in users from Italy. It could be that all of you ordered from same China source who made some mistakes. No one else reported anything similar so far so all of you from Italy must be sharing some information's regarding extender source. Some picture or link would be great so we can investigate this further and eliminate this as a problem.

Edit:
For all who encounter similar problem I saved video how to replace socket. Anyone can do this, it is very easy and if you don't have hot air gun, any mobile or computer repair shop can do this.

Hello Igor,

can you post a link to the right socket? My SD Cards don't work with the V1200 and I'll try a new socket. Thanks

@Michael AMike
  This one should do it.

Also got info that this extender destroyed sockets, any experience with this one or others maybe?

Looks like the extenders that i have and use, havnt broken anything yet but if i can avoid risking it that would be good, what extenders would you reccomend?

Edit: i mesured the extenders i have and it seems the card part on it it slightly thicker then the SD cards i have, about 0.1mm thicker wich isnt alot but within spec, other then that they are exactly the same dont see how they could damage slots to be honest. maybe some adapters were sold that looks same as mine but wasnt..

Of course we are in contact with cellphone... with Stefano, Michele(Kaffeine), Ignazio and others italians... but we we bought the extender from different shop.

For example in my Vampire 1200 I've used an extender bought on eBay. I put in a drawer of my desk maybe 1 or 2 years ago beacause i've used another of this for my 600v2.

Please consider to suggest a working one or send it with Vampire.

My V1200 II card hasn't arrived yet, but this is the extender i purchased. I won't be using it and will watch this thread closely. Thanks Igor for the warning.

Dear Igor,

First of all I want to thank you again for the way you solved my issue. I putted this extender ( EXTERNAL LINK ) in my v1200 before starting it so I didn't know the extender had broked it. I have to say also that I had putted it before in my Vampite v4 without problems. Anyway to avoid issues in the future I suggest  you (if technically possibile) to adopt microsd socket without 'click' just like raspberry 3 and 4.

All the clues points towards the Italian member of Apollo Team. He secretly works for Jens and tries to destroy every sd slot on vampire cards.. ;P

so on V1200 can I use without problems what I use on V500?

Not entirely V1200 problem, as I managed to destroy my V500 socket at the first insert. It turned out, the board that goes in the slot is not cut properly, has no dent on the bottom-front side and it bent the pins. I have replaced the socket and it works but has some strange lag when first inserting the card.
Once I improved the adapter by cutting some material where it should be cut at the factory it plugs in perfectly now.

Could someone please post close up pics of how this card should look and how the bad ones with extra material look.

No way to post pics right now. But if you look at the bottom of the actual microSD card, you will find out that on the front side where it is supposed to be inserted in socket, it has its edge slightly angled. This is to guide the card just before it comes in contact with the pins in the socket. Now, if you compare this to the adapter, you will find out it doesn't have this angled edge, just straight 90 degrees edge instead. This can hook and bend pins in the socket if inserted uncarefully. You can use nail file to make this edge angled and the adapter itself safer.

I'm very thankful for this thread as I am expecting my micro SD CARD and extension cable by the end of this week.

Given how sturdy all other ports (DIGITAL-VIDEO, USB, power) are I don't think I would have been adequately careful with micro SD, if I haven't read about it here.

Edit: I wrote DIGITAL-VIDEO.  But forums keep showing "digital video".  Weird...

Thanks for the link - I've orderd one. Yes, I've used an extender, not exactly the same but I would suggest that's the reason why mine isn't working.

This is because this is a trademark (see top right of the official logos: EXTERNAL LINK ) and can't be used freely without paying a license.

Today I've changed the slot and that fixed my problem. Thanks for the heads up.

It would have been great if you had forwarded this message to the people who bought one as a warning. Too late for me now.
