Vampire Ethernet

Ok, so can someone point me in the right direction regarding getting ethernet working? It's the networking/software end that I'm just not getting yet, and all the guides presume I'm insstalling wireless on a 1200.

Please don't tell me to download coffin, I already have a 3.1 setup I'm happy with, I just need to understand what I actually need to add to my existing setup.

I've connected the hardware as described in the Apollo accellerators wikki, it then says to install the SAGA driver and you're good to go, but then talks about a v2expeth.device driver, do I need both?

I have installed MUI and Miami after that but they're just not working.

Can someone list me exactly what devices and network settings have to be specified and how?

Once again, posting for advice has prompted me to solve the problem myself. Mods I will understand if you delete this thread.

In short, for anyone interested, v2expeth.device plus MUI and Miami will do it.

Vampire, so so good...

I couldn't get a usable speed on my setup, gave up for now. Enjoy!!

I know you solved it already, but I was already part way through making the guide when you wrote.  So here it is anyhow.

For all those who doubt the performance of the ENC28J60 module connected to the V500's exp port, check the last few seconds of the video.  I call that sufficient.  :-D

Now that I've been using it for a couple of days I'm having the same speed problem.

At least with AmiTCP, it starts off fast then grinds down to a trickle, taking ages to transfer even small files (and crashing within 1/2 hour, usually before the transfer is complete).

For the moment I've gone back to ZIP disks to transfer data to my PC, but if anyone has a suggestion for trouble-shooting speed and general instability let me know.

This vid looks really helpful - I couldn't get MiamiDX to work so I went back to 'regular' Miami, but you have listed all the settings there, so I'm going to give it another try when I get some free time.

Cheers!

I bought a enc28j60 module which gave me trouble.  It was sold as 3.3v but I suspect it was faulty or perhaps a tolerant 5v module.  It performed slow at first and eventually (after some minutes) slowed to almost a standstill.  I replaced the module and the experience was.......well like in the end of my video.

The SPI bus on the Vampire is capable of 20Mbit so you should expect a reasonable throughput.  I get up to 400Kb/s but I am not sure where the practical limit is.  Perhaps with some more tuning greater throughput could be achieved.

You should have a more than usable experience if your module and wired correctly, the correct voltage (3.3v) and functioning.  I would swap it for a new one and see if that helps.

Hey Ronnie, thanks for the little video thing there. i thought i was on a more than reasonable setup with 50-100kB/s but seeing you get 300-400...
so i did everything as per the video, and still only getting the 50 to 100kB/s ... more around the 50.

then i figured. hey i'm using genesis, lets actually install Roadshow i've bought and paid for.

boom. i'm getting 150-200. ok so i've had to rebuild my hosts file, but hey, i'm getting double the throughput.

  Thanks again! :D

That is interesting.  So the TCP Stack you used influenced the throughput.  That doesn't really make sense to me but it is a very interesting observation.  I wonder how many others have found the same situation.  Sounds like some research is required to understand that better.  I would be surprised if Genesis were really so badly constructed that it halved the throughput.  But it would be nice to hear the experiences of others.

I guess this software was written in the time when the best the average man could hope for was a 56k dialup modem.  Any inefficiency in the TCP Stack would likely go unnoticed at such low speeds.

Yeah even with my A600 setup with PCMCIA with decent speeds, I noticed a noticeable improvement when I switched to roadshow over Miami.

i even saw peak throughput of around about 300kB/s in ibrowse when downloading from aminet. it did seem to bobble about a bit anywhere from 150-300, and would usually take time to get going starting at around 30-40 but climbing up from there.

anyway, am tempted to plug the old A3k back in and see what roadshow makes of the Z3 X-Surf100!

also, remote desktop sessions seem to be generally a much nicer experience, even higher bit depth screens seem more comfortable to use.

even tried mounting an ISO file hosted on a SMB network share off a windows server, as a local drive. worked absolutely fine. very temped to convert to ISO all my amiga CD's now.
