V4 Standalone Questionpage  1 2

I know most of us here that are familiar with the Amiga and Vampire will have the ability to setup a CF card or use adf's of workbench to setup a hard drive, but is there any work going into the standalone for the inclusion of some boot media, so that new users can setup the V4 without having to use another computer?

I have no idea what the best option would be, but I suppose it could come in the form of a USB drive or memory card specifically for the V4.

Its just a thought, but it would make it more of a 'real' computer and may also get more people interested.

Wouldn't it be great if there were an optimised 68080 compiled version of Workbench 3.1.4 legally licensed from Hyperion (or would it be Amiga Inc?)

I think it should be released on Dvd with many addons, libs and many icons themes...

Actually you have this already.
- 68080 is the fastest of all 68K CPUs.
This means Kick 3.1.4 will run fastest on 68080.
- There is not really much in Kickstart which eats a lot time and could be optimized for a CPU. And  68080 is designed to execute 68k code the fastest - it has no "holes" like the 68060 did - which means you needed to adapt software for the Motos-060 - but you do not need this for the 68080.
- What eats time are datatypes like JPEG - and actually the JPEG datatype is optimized for AMMX available on Aminet.

Presumably you need a Kickstart and Workbench as its a brand new computer not from Commodore. SO if it had AMMX optimisations like that out of the box it would be sweet! :-)

I was thinking of something that could be used directly from the standalone, but I suppose you could get a DVD's worth quite easily on a memory card or usb.

A1200 version works well.

REALLY hoping we can get this thing to boot off CD - would eliminate the utter hell involved in installing 3.9 we currently go through...

Thanks Tuko, but don't I need to buy v4 standalone first?

Your previous question has been answered. That last looks like a trolling attempt.

I was thinking something that would come with the V4 Standalone, so what ever would work with that, so that users could set up CF, HD, SDCard, SSD without the need for another computer, install Workbench and drivers.

He ment is WB 3.1.4 or OS 3.9 with SAGA drivers bundle possible. I believe on Standalone purchase. This will be more question for Amiga dealers then officially policy due to know (c) Amiga mess. AS Gunnar mentions its a bit dependent installation on devices one pick.

Hi Vojin,

I think what Andrew is alluding to is some boot media that he can insert when the disk request comes up and asks for a floppy.
So for example he wants to be able to put a disk into the Floppy disk drive or a CD/DVD into the DVD Rom drive and boot from that then set up the CF, SD or HD in the same manner as we used to. In other words set up the Amiga without having to use Windoze or Linux. Only use the Amiga Vampire.
I have to admit it would be nice to be able to set-up without any other OS.

Cheers,
Alan from Oz

Exactly..

On an actual Amiga 3.1.4 isn't too bad to install - either mount the .ADFs in a gotek or make actual floppies and install from them.

3.9 on the other hand is a nightmare because most of us don't have CD drives on our Amigas. So it takes having a setup on a PC in emulation to read the CD, install onto CF or SD and then move the card over to the machine. Granted I'm just getting back into Amiga after a long hiatus, but it took me nearly a week of efforts to finally get a working 3.9 installation set up and even then I didn't get the CF drive partitioned how I really wanted it because of all the size limitation headaches.

Would be REALLY nice if the Vampire could be bootable off IDE (with an IDE or SATA CD drive). Don't know if that's possible though.

Although, in that case, until there is legacy floppy support I would suspect that would make installing 3.1.4 the hassle requiring emulation to set up...

Ok, to be clear I am asking if there will be any workbench installation bundled with the V4 standalone, that will be able to be used with the V4 out of the box. No need for external drives, adaptors, gotek or a PC to set it up.

I doubt this will happen especially with the issues of copyright etc that plague the Amiga at the moment, but if it was possible then it would open up the V4 to more casual users.

I'm sure the resellers will think of something. The team should be focused on getting the V4 released first of all.
