Well my choice AGA in Wampire V500 V2+....

yeah you've pretty much nailed it.
the Gold3.x core that the V4 will be release with, will contain a full AGA chipset effectively rendering the host amiga down to a glorified "port dock" giving you the classic amiga interfaces for keyboard, floppy, mouse, joystick, etc. etc. but your sound, chipset graphics, and RTG graphics will all be run off the FPGA, and therefore be able to come out of the H-D-M-I port

the gold2.x on the V2 doesn't have any active chipset stuff going on, so still leaves the classic chipset active so that "if you wanted to" you could run chipset graphics through the normal outputs. the H-D-M-I is ONLY available for RTG graphics, and audio is driven by paula as per normal.

I don't think its a total override for everything, given that the Input/Output systems are still available.

I used to think that it was a pretty close deal with the cyberstormMk3/ppc and blizzardppc with their b/cvision add on cards. as these cards hosted storage, CPU, ram and graphics on one core board. again rendering the actual host machine down to basic I/O duties - I don't think it wouldn't have been much of a push to have a dummy carrier board being the host with a couple of roms and some I/O plugs, and the accelerator card be "the computer"...

Does the Vampire v4 override the host systems custom chip set in all scenarios?
i.e. would Alice, Gayle, Paula and Lisa be effectively made redundant as they’re overridden by the FPGA chip?

We have 2 CORE versions for the Vampire cards:

  GOLD 2.x
  - includes the world fastest 68K CPU - 68080.
  - includes FastIDE
  - includes fast RTG video
  - includes very fast Fastmem
  - includes SDcard
  - uses the old mainboard AMIGA chipset.

  GOLD 3.x
  - includes the world fastest 68K CPU - 68080.
  - includes FastIDE
  - includes fast RTG video
  - includes very fast Fastmem
  - includes SDcard
  - includes AGA chipset in FPGA

  So you have the choice

Thanks, much much clearer now :)

Yeah, pretty much decided that for me it’s the standalone model. Like the idea of having a dedicated classic system and a dedicated 68k NG system :)

A carrier board is a good idea and a good way to add components especially if it fits into one of the remanufactured Amiga 1200 cases or a new Amiga 500 case. The concept of the V4 1200 card with an edge connector would make it possible to connect the V4 1200 o the carrier board giving the V4 or a future V5, etc. access to additional components such as Amiga mouse and joystick ports, additional usb ports, a passthrough hdmi port, a floppy connector compatible with Gotek, additional 4 pin power connectors on the onboard and ide headers for a dvdrom, laptop power and an Amiga 1200 keyboard connector. The types of components on the carrier board make it possible for different variations.

There wouldn't be a need for custom chips like on the A1200 reloaded because everything will be contained in the FPGA chip.

It would be great to have one of these new A1200 carrier board to install in my A1200 case connected to my new V4 1200 card so I can attach my Amiga mouse, joystick and keyboard. And if designed well it would fit nicely in my A1200 case. Just a nice thought.

Hello everyone!

I've been following this thread for a while and had a few questions:

-What is the max power draw the V4 Standalone requires? Recommended power supply  requirements?

-How much heat does the FPGA put off? Would it be possible to place the V4 in a sealed case, or would it require a heatsink?

-If a heatsink is recommended what areas would need to be cooled aside from the processor?

Thank you for any help, and cannot wait for a release date!

With CF about 3 Watt

Sealed case works fine for me.

  a) How much would be approx. for Standalone + SSD + DVD + CF and could miniUSB Android phone like chargers provide enough power?

  b) Is charger planned to be provided with Standalone, or we use one of ours?

  c) Cooling for V4s is not required, as seen on V2 Vamps?

so a 2.5" SSD eats about 2 to 2.5Watts on a random write and the same for a random read. bigger drives and faster controllers could double this.
  25-100 mili-watts in idle.
this is pulled off of the 5Volt rail.

so, a V4 with CF card @ 3W could easily run off a 1 amp "slow" 5volt usb charger.
putting a full SSD onto the mix and you'd better be feeding it with a 2amp usb charger.

i've just pulled a 5.25" DVD-R/W drive out of a box for some numbers.
  1.5amps on 5Volt & 1.5amps on 12volts. so that's a potential 25W! thats 5Aamps@5volts! i guess that's only needing the full juice in burn mode.
i have also got a USB powered slimline DVD-R/W - it's fine running off a single USB, but has a second power only USB cable for writes - so i'm guessing according to worst case scenario according to USB power specification,  maximum power it'll get/need is 5Watts for read, and 10Watts for write.

  so:-
  3watts for Vamp and CF
  3Watts for 2.5" SSD
5Watts for best case slimline optical drive.

11Watts would need a 2.5amp charger! do-able, but even an ipad charger only produces 12watts. same for the HP Stream tablets.

i wouldn't bother with an optical drive personally, but that's just me.

side note reference point (c), should we be cooling our vamps then? because i've not...

So no vents or airflow are required?

you wont be needing air vents at all, fpga develop little heat and not supposed to be cooled

Not officially supported, but just a quick test of nice Real hardware UAE state file loader (USSLOAD) on Amiga Vampire 4 Standalone with Stock Amiga 1200 "Pinball Fantasies (AGA)" -state file save, which was made on WinUAE.

Hi all,

So I've created a 3d-model of the V4 standalone. Does someone have the dimensions where pcb holes and components sits on this board? Please share and I will then make this model publicly available for anyone who wants to make their own 3d printable V4-case with proper positioned cutouts for connectors.

Is the pcb 1.6 mm in thickness?

This document unfortunately doesn't have all the information I need

Ok question - will the stand-alone be bootable off the built in microSD or do you have to install an IDE device and boot off that?

Unofficially, V4 cores should support both IDE and SD card boot. I am hoping USB boot could be added at some point, why not having a USB stick FFS/PFS formatted with WB just in case :)

Will this model open in something so basic as tinkercad?

For the love of god, if we're switching to USB-C connector for power, PLEASE don't screw it up like the Raspberry Pi guys did with the RasPi4...

It looks like a Micro-USB in the 3D render.

For those interested, and for what it's worth, vesalia has entries on their site to pre-order the V4SA and the A1200 V2 with prices listed. It says it's strictly to gauge interest, but from what I can tell, putting in an order gets you a spot in line. You don't pay until they're in stock and ready to ship.

Still, if the prices they showed hold, I think it's QUITE reasonable - a bit more than the V2 500 and 600, but not insanely so.

I put mine in for the V4SA...

Fingers crossed!!!
