I am finding the AROS system to be an increasingly attractive OS option.
It also bypasses the issues with who owns what part of Workbench and the ROMs.

It could really be the "default" standalone OS option "if done right", really bypassing (and bypissing) all Amiga land legal mambo-jumbo.

Would love to see other options too, but one free,working and in development surely is a nice option.

Now if we could only recruit some good graphic artists and workbench modders to give the AROS desktop a severe makeover.. I suppose the good thing is that is an easy fix but man are those default icons something only its mother could love.

@Eric Gus

FWIW, the AROS default icons are still nicer than the OS3.x default icons but that isn't saying a whole lot in 2019.  Does anyone know if AROS is compatible with NewIocns, GlowIcons or any of the the other icon replacements that work with OS3.x?

Is not necessary to search a lot. There is already a complete aros 68k distribution (Aros vision) with nice desktop icons and os 3.9 feel, and his author seems to be very interested to build a vampire version of it.

I use icon library from PeterK and you can use most of the icons, GlowIcons can also be used by a trick. I use Kens icons and magellan as desktop in my distribution

@Olaf
Are still issues with boot from cf cards and rtg graphics?

People should really refrain from posting nightly builds, because EVERYBODY hates those shitty Gorilla icons and is instantly turned away from AROS.
  I really don't understand why they don't change it to a more amigaish look.

  But nobody of the devs want to change them. I had these discussion like ten years ago, but they don't change it.
  But then they cry because people think AROS is shitty, just because of the looks of those fucking nightly builds.

I have no vampire myself but it seems to be solved. But I do not know if the needed changes are public already

I think it would be best if a Vampire-AROS distribution took as much eye candy from CoffinOS as possible. Ideally the two distris would then look identical.

This sounds like a good idea to me.

Yes, distancing the project from anything Hyperion touches is a good thing.  If Ben wins this latest round of law suits it will only encourage him to sue other parties.  The sooner the Vampire has a viable alternative to OS3.x, the better.

Yes, I know. And I have heard that argument many times.

But on the other side so many people are turned away by AROS simply because they saw those shitty Gorilla icons and think "ah, that's AROS. Looks horrible and not Amiga style."

And I really don't know why they can't use something else for testing.
