...use a laser printer???

I use win-dos 7 and had to call up the task manager because google chrome caused an "out of memory" error. So I looked and it was using somewhere between 4 and 7 gigabytes of RAM. (I wasn't about to add up the 12 or so entries for it.) I have 32 gigs, 16 is used as a RAM disk. I had about 3 or 4 gigs at least "free".

BUT, I saw a program called "BrStMonW.exe" (description: Status Monitor Application) running. I didn't know what it was.

So, I looked it up on the internet, turns out it's EXTERNAL LINK
"What is BrStMonW.exe?
The genuine BrStMonW.exe file is a software component of Brother Printer Status Monitor by Brother.
The Brother Printer Status Monitor is a utility that displays printer status and ink levels. BrStMonW.exe is a process that is runs the user interface for the Brother Printer Status Monitor."

But, problem is that it uses 277,544,000 bytes of RAM while running. So that means that, only a Vampire 4 would be able to use modern day laser printers. Imagine that, eh???

But new and faster from the other accelerators. Halleluiah to this too.  :)

Nonsense... Those printers are still PCL compatible, so it should be able to print with a tiny HP Laserjet 3/4/5 driver. No need to port modern monster drivers which also are monitoring user for NSA.

Well, TurboPrint drivers, altough costly, are best OS3 solution there is. Even OS4 also. With it, most of PCL based HP printers should work, as mentioned.

EXTERNAL LINK
HP_LaserJet2, HP_LaserJet3, HP_LaserJet4, HP_LaserJet4L, HP_LaserJet5series, HP_LaserJet6series,
HP_LaserJet1100, HP_LaserJet1200, HP_LaserJet1300, HP_LaserJet2xxx,
HP_PaintJet,PaintJetXL, HP_PaintJet300XL
HP_PhotoSmart1000, HP_PhotoSmart11xx, HP_PhotoSmart12xx, HP_PhotoSmart13xx

Without it, yes, (modern) printing drivers (and scanner ones)
are AmigaOSs real weekest knee. At least for people that live
out of text processors and presentations (and DTP).

Dont mix driver with some status utility. Yes, those Windows "tasks and processes" eat a lot, alongside windows. But long time ago, people cared about efficiency (in RAM terms) of their apps, at point memory went cheap and big (especially after 0.5GB barrier)

If AmigaOS developer would look to real user needs:

  - They would develop modern TCP/IP stack
  - Would invest in modernized browser and Javascript/Java ports
  - And in decent Office

That would, more then RadeonHD drivers, newer OpenGL like tools,
transparency when dragging, swap mem and "extended memory"  ... bring AmigaOS to modernity, from ordinary joe end user perspective.

Not entirely sure the point you're trying to make in your first post, but the above statement is not entirely true. As long as your printer supports PostScript (which most do) it shouldn't be an issue. Even many of the latest laser printers still support PostScript

I have a Samsung Colour Laser Multifunction Center I bought 4 years back and works just fine with my A600 (with Vampire) and also my A1200 (with ACA1221). The printer and both Amiga's are connected via local network. I use NetParLPR and PRT42_50 from Aminet and can print fine. It's a bit of stuffing around to get setup and printing is basic but it works.

My apologies if this is not what you were talking about.

The drivers are usually built into Windows these days, or at least available on Windows Update. These ones won't be massive, just the core functionality with all the crap cut out.

Thank you everyone for answering. That's valuable information.

I was just shocked to see that crazy large program running in the background on my computer. Of course I thought "well, how would a Vampire (Amiga) communicate with a 'modern era' laser printer with THAT in the way?"

Hi Vojin,

I'm going to have to buy that when I get my Vampire.

That'll happen when more Vampires are sold. They are still hard to get.

I am using a HPOfficejet6820 with Turboprint7.6/HPDeskjet550C driver through netprinter.device on my Amiga600/Vampire2
Same config works well on my X5000 too
Printing works

Really?
Until we *have* to switch to IPv6, Roadshow is all we need and already have.
Java. What for. Java is on decline anyway.
Yes decent browser and office (wordprocessor and spredsheet) would be nice indeed.

But even Vamp is not powerful enough for truly competitive uptodate browser. Not mentioning it is huge (Trumps huge) task to port and maintain such software.

Netsurf is very competitive.

True, but IPv6 only time will come in few years. Roadshow could have a GUI for config.

Even its not speed champion, it open doors to some apps. Like OperaMini, Apache Office etc. It is closest to "universal apps" that we came to, even Android is taking over the world.

Also its a common shared component for many other apps that could be ported.

Midori is an example of both lightweight and modern browser. There are couple more, and with next iteration of Vampire should be "mighty enough".

Meanwhile, we do have Netsurf.

On Office side, I wonder was PapyrousOffice ever stable?

Rose-colored glasses ON
Yes, it is the best we have atm, just it is far from competitive and uptodate with big three :(

No one can compete to FF-Chrome (I dont find IE/Edge to be in same category) and since they so frequently update nowadays, no other platform but supported ones, can catch up/maintain it.

However, there are couple quite useful and nice alternatives with some even nicer features and much lower requirements, e.g. Opera before switching to Chrome engine and Midori. And surely a lot of "copy-paste" browsers that have same engines as FF/Chrome, which in my book is the same.

Netsurf is huge jump in OS3 world. Advanced OWB on AROS could be next.

Bummer, now there's no reason to buy a Vampire if it can't . . .

1. Fly
2. Swim in Ocean
3. Do Stepdance

LOL

Utter nonsense!

Its natural for Vampires to fly. You can always throw one out of window to try it, if you are rich enough and patient to get a board. I bet Igor did it!

Sadly very few Amigish countries has a ocean nearby (maybe that one black user in Texas!) but he can try it swimming.

Dracula could possibly learn to stepdance!

Aw man, you just shattered my dreams right there.
What about world peace? Or time travel? Will it be able to do that?
