As I have been using my 600 probably more than I ever did recently that smell of fish has been increasing...

So its off for a re-capping.

Any advice, gotchas, etc to watch out for when I remove it from the cpu?

For most people it pops off by itself when you remove the screws... :o)

I don't think there is anything to watch out for.

Just be prudent when removing the hdmi cable - be nice with the connector. And don't run your Amiga without the Vampire you risk a cardiac attack :)

The only thing that they have to do is just using sandpaper for the socket.

Just make the socket thinner, until it doesn`t pops off. Then it`s  holding place without the screws. Believe me.

I did the transplant this weekend and my 600 is off to the capacitor doctor. My standby 600 is now hosting the vampire. The transplant was not as easy as i had hoped.

The 600 thats gone for recapping (version 2d) holds the vampire really well while the standby (version 1.5) requied me to sand down the white standoffs. There must be some tiny difference in cpu mounting. I also found that the standoffs (3d printed?) dont like the repeated screwing  in and out of the tiny screws as the material wears away quickly. This means i have had to increase the size of the screws.

With that in mind has anyone come up with a better standoff?

Use a small block of wood? Cut it slightly larger than required and then sand it down until it fits perfectly. If you use a hard wood, the threads should be lasting for a while.
