Gold 3: a Question About Video Output

As I understand it Gold 3 will bring the benefit of outputting SAGA, AGA, ECS and OCS through DIGITAL-VIDEO without the need to switch inputs on your monitor which is an excellent feature.

The question I have is if you will still have the option of the current arrangement of SAGA through DIGITAL-VIDEO but AGA (if you have an A1200 with a V4), ECS and OCS through the Amiga's own RGB port.

The scenario would be that you had a CRT TV with SCART input and an LCD monitor side by side. You would like to have your Workbench on your LCD in hi-res 720P but you would like to have your games, both WHDLoad and natively installed, going through the RGB to the CRT for the authentic scanline look etc. Almost like multi-monitor support. Plus you could still enjoy all the benefits of the extra features of Gold 3.

I know you can have scanlines for games on an LCD with Core 3 but it would still be nice to have the option of the real thing. It just provides an extra level of freedom of choice for Vampire users. Thanks for your time guys.

Good questions.

My understanding is that there will be a way to choose how "classic" chipset video and audio is handled, either going through DIGITAL-VIDEO or via the regular RGB and RCA ports. It is an all or nothing choice.

There have been previews of a scanline emulation on the DIGITAL-VIDEO output. I don't know which core this is planned for.

Cheers!

Ok. That would be a shame if that were the case, but not a deal breaker. Being able to determine which chipset video modes go through which output would be a nice level of freedom. Whether it's possible or not is another story.

  Gold 3 I believe.

No. You must have scanlines, and interlace flicker, or you aren't a true Amigan... ;)

The Vampire cannot turn off the original chipset so it will still be running in parallel, however it will not have access to the Vampire chipmem so to support regular RGB output, they will have to make a 'compatible' mode which also means that you will lose the 4MB chip as well as the new audio capabilities from PAMELA.

For the scanline emulation, as long as they're done right, I prefer them as it makes it look more genuine. :) However, I would hope they would make it configurable.

I'm sure, if the scanline feature is inplemented, it will at least sooner or later be possible to opt it out.
Maybe at first it might be a "we made this for you, you wanted it, now use it" thing, and keep in mind that some things take time to code.

My guess, though, is that perhsps it will be easy to make such an option directly in the code while medling with it, but once more, I'm not a programmer so I don't really know. This is just what makes the most sense to me

Fake scan lines give me migraines (I think my eyes perceive them as it being a blurry display) .. more so on LCD displays.. the gimmicky novelty wears off quickly and it gets irritating..

No it can't turn them off. but then again it doesn't have to route bus signals to them either .. which is effectively setting them to idle.

Is this the first time that Amigas were capable of dual display?

No, my A3000 was triple display more than 15 years ago.

Also Indivision ECS can do dual native display from what I recall, and any Amiga with graphics card have been capable of dual display since they first showed up, way back.

Wow I never knew this .. thats amazing (not that I had the money to actually even buy 1 graphics card for my 3000 back then but still impressive)

I had A4000 and later A4000T with EGS Spectrum 24 and had a 21" VGA and an A1084 monitor at once. The EGS Spectrum 24 also supported multiple cards for multiple monitors at once.

I ran Mac emulator with two separate monitor outputs as well, Mac OS supported "extended" desktop, so I could move windows from one monitor to the other. On my Amiga, in the 90's.

Thats a real achievement, and I am glad some gfx cards supported it, but yet not even OS 4.x has multiple display - clone or extended support. And back in the days, having money for both such expanded Amiga and colour monitors, man that is both kidneys value :-)

Using 2 monitors on amigaos is possible ?, like moving the cursor from one screen to other ?.

I wouldn’t want  or need multiple displays if I couldn’t have separate programs running. To have the same instance running in both monitors is pointless.

If you use a graphics card and open up a program on the graphics card, you can open up another program on the chipset in the Amiga.
I used to do this alot. One example was playing Civilization on the AGA chipset, taking the video output from the motherboard, into a TV card in my mediator and playing the game in a window on Workbench, that was set to an output on my voodoo 3 card
