Icedrake Now Freezing In Apollo OS 8.2

Hi guys, I've have my Icedrake a few weeks and I've been having a few issues which I've been trying to work out... let me give some details.

So before this a had a Vampire 1200 V2, which I ran for a good couple of years with no issues, I mention this because the Icedrake now runs on the same hardware (1d4 motherboard that's been recapped, with timing fix).

Since moving over I seem to have run into some obstacles, and I've been trying to work out what's going on.

When I first got the card I would get about 25% of the time a black screen at boot, sometimes I would get the "insert CF card" message too... after a couple of core updates that seems to have gone away BUT on Apollo OS 8.2 my setup just keep randomly freezing.

It seems to be semi random, but copying files from SD almost always seems to upset it (though it will happen without the SD card too).... after a short while everythign will freeze and I have to reboot. Again a short while after that, it will freeze again etc.

Things I have tried in no particular order:

Tried two CF Cards (Sandisk Ultra 32GB, Sandisk Extreme 128GB)
Tried a different Micro SD
Reflashed the core (I've running the latest version as of now 8728)
Tried a different CF reader and cable (it does seem to be worse with the one shipped)
Redownloaded Apollo OS incase of bad download (twice)
Took everything out and reseated everything, I also cleaned the contacts on my motherboard.
Tried two power supplies, the first my trusty converted ATX which I used with the V1200, I then bought a new "Boost" PSU with 55w and 8A.
Downloaded and ran Amiga test kit, tests complete OK.
I have another A1200, I tried to test on that but I just get a black screen at boot. It's a rev 2B board, and I haven't timing fixed it yet so that could be why but it doesn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

It didn't freeze in 8.1, so I wondered if it could be to with 8.2 OS?

I also noticed in 8.2 that there is no inital setup process (it doesn't ask for country, region, pref etc) like there was in 8.1? Could this have something to do with it?

I have tried everything I can think of, and I try to figure these thing sout without asking but I have spent a ton of time and money trying to troubleshoot this without look... so any help appreciated.

Thanks, Pete.

OK, so I think I may have a problem guys...

I found the old 8.1 download, cleared and reflashed the CF with that...

It completed the pref's setup, rebooted and then froze :-(

Problem with the card?

Hello Pete,

maybe for test you can disable the Network stack, which get automatically loaded on 8.2 - and see if this makes a difference.

Hello Gunnar, thanks for the reply...

So last night I booted up and to make sure I deleted v4net and got the message unable to restart netstack, I thought you had it because it worked a little longer but then froze again.

I then flashed 8.1 and in the first prefs turned off tcp/ip boot, set UK etc saved and rebooted... it froze again after about 30 seconds :-(

Tried 8.2 again this morning and pretty much froze straight away while file copying... that does seem to really upset it.

Can you think of anything else I could try? I'm out of ideas.

Oh and something else, not sure if it’s relevant or I’m doing something wrong but my drive speed never gets above 3.5mb/s? My V1200 did around 12mb/s and I was expecting the same? Does this sound right?

  Thanks, Pete.

Right Gunnar, what I will do is get my second 1200 recapped and timing fixed, wait for next Core and OS version and test again with that. If it still locks up, I will be in touch to request the card be tested. Regards, Pete.

Unfortunately I have the same problems with freezes all the time too.
Don't know what to do anymore.
Coffin (R60) works little better, ApolloOS, I only tried 8.2 (with cores 8728 and 8752) crashes after opening APDF, Videos, playing MP3 or games. Sometimes later mostly earlier.
My A1200 1B is recapped. I will try my escom produced 1200, which is not yet.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I found that moving to Coffin r60 helped too... though I still get the occasional blip.

My second 1200 is being recapped and timing fixed, so I will test with that soon.

I've also seen at least one or two other people with frezzing issues, which gives me hope that this may be a software / core issue rather than my machine. That said, you know what old computers are like! I'll know once I test on the other 1200.

Pete.

In Coffin, try disabling "Non Blocking" in MagicMenu prefs and see if that makes a difference.

I also frost. But in 10 minutes it will work again without a reset. This may be interesting because of a debugging.

This is not normal. Ice should run 100% smooth and stable.
If you have any issue then come to our discord channel and lets discuss your settings and configurations.
See you there

I'm still awaiting my second 1200 back to test, but it's much more stable on Coffin (though it still does it occasionally)... While it's not a widespread thing from what I can tell, there's definately a few of us who get this... I have tried many things, and in the end just switched to Coffin in the mean time.
