I'd suggest starting with C or C++ first.

Thanks for your tips Steve, that sounds very helpful. In my case I did C and Pascal at uni over 20 years ago on the PC. And I did simulated Assembly language as well at a rudimentary level. Ironically Assembly is what appealed and made sense to me, though I only did a tiny bit. As soon as I saw COBOL I fled in terror, and I hated Java too.

But I've never done any programming on Amiga except for scripting. I wonder if there is anything out there explaining that kind of thing. if there is not, then I guess me writing it might be more useful than any code I'm able to come up with this year. So in keeping with the original posters points, do you know any Amiga centric resources? or do you suggest other areas to get up to speed, regroup and then head back to Amiga camp later?

Like many of us here, I'm very devoted to the Amiga and strongly want to see it survive the level now that its on its last life. Apollo have worked hard and got us an extra life to last another level or two. It looks like AROS will just make it right before before they run out of serious coders. I think we have 3 - 5 years to make good use of the Retro computing fad, 68080, AROS, and an anti Silicon-Valley market desire for another platform.

  Bravo Apollo team!

Yeah, I agree.  COBOL is horrible.  Here's an Amiga specific book for C.  It's really good.  Essentially it's C for Dummies on the Amiga.  I had the hard copy way back in the late 80's but now it's available for free online at archive.org:  EXTERNAL LINK

For scripting on the Amiga, see this:  EXTERNAL LINK

Like always with the Amiga, be the change that you want to see.

If you need more software of a certain type, start coding that software.

You're welcome Andy.  I spent most of yesterday setting up a virtual A1200 on my Windows 10 system to test a C/C++ cross-compiler.  I highly recommend AmiDevCpp.  It comes complete with an IDE and the capability to generate EXE's for OS3, OS4, MorphOS and AROS.  It uses GCC/G++ for compilation.  Just pick your target and compile.  It's extremely easy now to compile a project and just drop the EXE into a shared folder for my virtual A1200 system under WinUAE for testing. If you're familiar with Visual Studio, CodeBlocks, or Dev C++, you'll be right at home as the IDE is Dev C++ 6.10.

Setup of the compiler is a breeze, takes only seconds and once installed, just open one of the examples, compile and then test.  You can get the installer for AmiDevCpp here: EXTERNAL LINK

Takes only seconds to get it going.  But it literally took me hours  to get a decent A1200 system going under WinUAE because I wanted RTG, AHI, an updated installer and the latest versions of MUI and some other stuff on it.  I should have just downloaded CoffinOS to save time but setting up an A1200 from scratch was a good exercise for me because I hadn't touched a real or virtual Amiga in nearly 2 years and needed the refresher.

If you want to run Gnuplot on Amiga more easy.you have two options:
  - use Debian68K
  - use MiNT. It's kernel is already very linux look alike. A lot of gnu utilities and libs already have been ported. MiNT even has a X window subsystem.

You want productive worprocessing, spreadsheet, database, photo editing, desktop publishing, CAD, sequencer software on 68K? Use 68K mac or Atari. Use Papyrus, LDW-Powercalc, Adimens/Phoenix, Photoline, Calamus, GFA-CAD, Cubase/Notator. With MiNT some of the productive Atari software already will run on Amiga. But for most Atari software you still need the real machine. I hope, that Vampire soon runs in ST.

It will be super sweet if this get ported to Amiga 68k and not be MorphOS exclusive!
