Howdy,
saw this clip of someone running aVNC on an Amiga, basically using a "remote desktop" feature..
EXTERNAL LINK    (If link doesnt work, search for vnc amiga on youtube)

I think it is this software..
  EXTERNAL LINK
Now, the demo is "dead slow" but if it was running fast you could potentially run a modern browser on a Linux distro on a Rasp Pi 3 inside the Amiga case and then use AmiVNC to access the webbrowser from within Amiga OS 3.x ;-)

Anyone knows if this will run without MMU?
(My vamp is currently loaned to a curious retro-friend so I wont be able to try fo a while, sorry)

I use TwinVNC, here is a video I made of it running on an older core.

Wow, GIMP demo was impressive, very little lag.
Thanx for sharing

I've been looking for something like this for ages. How did I not ever come across this?? Really looking forward to trying this out.
Thanks Roy for sharing!!

With faster networking, I/O, graphics etc of the standalone Vampire V4 (but also the other Vampires) this really could solve the "unfixable" modern Internet browser issue under Amiga OS 3. Yea, its cheating, but under the circumstances, I'd say its fair enough.. ;-)

Hi Daniel -

I think the V4 with 512MB could possibly run a modern browser natively as long as you don't expect "too much" in terms of performance.

There is an interesting discussion on Amiga.org: EXTERNAL LINK
This is a proposal to get a modern webkit port. This time by a team that really knows what they are doing. This will likely only be for OS4/MOS/AROS at first. No "real" 68K platform will have the muscle, RAM or dependencies to make it immediately viable. Vampire V4 with 512MB may work once it is out. Should be interesting to see where that discussion goes. If the project is on github or similar I just know someone will start hacking to get it running on 68K :)

I wonder if a 1 or 2GB V4 is possible? Is there a 512MB limit on the ASIC?

In you tests does the PC side and Amiga side use EXACTLY the same pixel format ?
I mean converting RGB to RGBA or RGBA to ARGB have a speed cost

To be honest, I'm quite happy with Netsurf on a Vampire 600 V2. Some pages can take up to a couple of minutes to render but when Im chilling out in front of the A600, which happens on a daily basis these days and increasing, I don't mind. Im not in a hurry and it's kind of relaxing.

Anyway tried TwinVNC and remote connected to my PC and I was impressed. All things considered, it performed quite well at 1024x768.

To me it looked exactly the same. There will always be a speed cost, that's unavoidable, but it was definitely usable and resposive.

@Greg Yea, while a proper port running natively on the Amiga would be nice it is a big project and you'd still need to compromise a lot.
And of course, after much effort to get it to run on a standalone Vampire V4, it would still be quite slow and limiting experience as the modern web is built for GigaHerz devices with lots of ram. And of course, it would be a pretty excluding experience, reserved for the 512MB V4 users..

By cheating with VNC you can simply focus on optimizing that particular experience and leave the huge task of creating a good modern web browser to the larger teams in the linux, windows, mac, android whatever -world. Well that my opinion anyway. :-)

Edit: Some sort of Drop-box functionality to go along with the "Remote desktop" would be a nice complement so that downloading files would be made useful from the Amiga perspective..(theres a bunch of open source alternatives for that which could be a good start)

Why so complicated? Just make your browser's download directory a samba share and mount that on the Amiga...

I suppose it's good choice if the host machines he's connecting to are Windows only. VNC is typically better cross platform and Twinvnc is known to work great on a Vampired Amigas.

If you read that litterally then yea, I agree. But I don't actually care too much how it works under the hood. I should have written "some type of auto-syncing off files between machines", if you already have a raspberry pi connected to the Vamp, then sure, theres a shorter path for those files ;-)

Do you know a way to connect the RPI to the VAMP?
Is it some Siamese thing?

Ethernet / Wifi? Standalone Vamp has ethernet, RaspPi3B+ has both ethernet and Wifi.. At the very least, RaspPi could act as a classic file server... PPl suggest Samba as it is available on many OSeds

So it turned our "ancient" platform has few ways of abusing Windows/Linux boxes and vice versa. Neat :-)

Isn't this what Steve Jones has been talking about with his new Checkmate A1500 Plus case and a V4 A500 or A600 or A1200 or the Standalone with the Raspberry Pi and the Siamese system?
I am fairly confident it is and Steve said that the software will be free. Just need the Pi and an (DIGITAL-VIDEO) switcher. He will reveal more when we get closer to release of the case.
