It would be interesting to know how many (few?) people have such systems.

Very few, maybe a few dozen, and it's hard to find these cards for sale.

Downloaded topgun videos 320 and 640 from the Riva thread and tested on Cyberstorm PPC 604e @ 333 MHz (yes 333 under-clocked from 350 MHz native chip) and also on Sonnet Crescendo 7200 G3 @ 400 MHz (512 kB). I used AMP2 which is my favourite MPEG player and is compiled also for Sonnet Crescendo 7200 PCI accelerator. Here are my results:

Topgun 320 CSPPC 604e/333 = 0 frames skipped out of 2142 => 24 fps
Topgun 640 CSPPC 604e/333 = 889 frames skipped out of 2142 => ~14 fps
Topgun 320 Sonnet G3/400 = 0 frames skipped out of 2142 => 24 fps
Topgun 640 Sonnet G3/400 = 4 frames skipped out of 2142 => ~24 fps

AMP2 setting: AHI Stereo, High 44kHz, CGX 24bit

Thanks for the test:

Can you test those videos too?

Sure ;o)

It was a bit more slower on CSPPC this time but Sonnet still keep it smooth. Here are details:

Avatar CSPPC 604e/333 = 2278 frames skipped out of 3869 => ~10 fps
Dron CSPPC 604e/333 = 3476 frames skipped out of 6146 => ~10 fps
Avatar Sonnet G3/400 = 55 frames skipped out of 3869 => ~24 fps
Dron Sonnet G3/400 = 10 frames skipped out of 6146 => ~24 fps

Hi Jan,

According to your tests both the Vampire and the Sonnet G3/400 can play those videos smooth and with full FPS, right?

But the Phase5 Cyberstorm with 333 MHz PPC is much to slow.
Even with a PPC which is 100 Mhz faster clocked than the one Phase 5 used to sell them with, right?
The Phas5 card can not reach 50% of the original Video-Framerate.

Jan, what Video cards do you use for both systems?
Is this related?

@Jan  Vonka

I did some tests yesterday to on a CSPPC (06060mhz and 233 Mhz
604e)with CVPPC card

These are my results:

Tron legacy fragment windowed:
2950 frames skipped from 6146 frames about 12,4 FPS

Full screen Hi-color:
2593 frames skipped from 6146 about 13,8 FPS

@Gunnar, yes my CSPPC has changed 604e cpu by faster one, phase5 did max 233 MHz. My both systems are following:
A4000T, Cyberstorm PPC 604e/333, 060/50, 128 MB, CVision PPC, Prelude sound card
A4000, Cyberstorm MK1 040/40 + 128 MB, Mediator MK3, Sonnet Crescendo 7200 G3/400 + 128 MB, Voodoo4 4500

@Mr-Z EdgeOfPanic: In the past when I compared video encoding performance between 200 MHz and 366 on the same computer and there was almost no difference (same with Frogger and AMP2). The only difference was when 060 was overclocked (you have 60 MHz, I have stock 50). Some software is way faster, some software is still the same no matter clock you have.

One explanation could be that the video playback is limited by cache misses and your fast memory speed.
And the faster CPU will not be much faster if the memory is not also faster.

That the Sonnet PPC scores as good as the Vampire and therefore much better than the Phase5 CyberPPC can be explained that the Sonnet contains an L2 Cache.

Makes sense?

@Mr-Z EdgeOfPanic: What sound setting have you used? Because I did some tests on the Dron video with various settings on my 333 MHz Cyberstorm setup:

NO SOUND:
Windowed: 2158/6146 => ~16 fps
FS Hicolor: 1633/6146 => ~18 fps
FS Truecolor: 3375/6146 => ~11 fps

AUDIO.DEVICE:
Windowed: 2253/6146 => ~15 fps
FS Hicolor: 1725/6146 => ~17 fps
FS Truecolor: 3428/6146 => ~11 fps

AHI (24bit HiFi++, stereo, 44kHz):
Windowed: 3476/6146 => ~10 fps
FS Hicolor: 3049/6146 => ~12 fps
FS Truecolor: 4015/6146 => ~8 fps

For the tests I've used sound settings AHI 1

I also played the tron video in 24 bit and used the following options

AHI 1 TRUECOLOR VERBOSE

Result 3727 frames skipped of 6146
This comes down to 9,4 FPS

ADoomWOS "timedemo demo1":

CyberstormPPC 604e/333 + 060/50
320x200: 77,03 fps
800x600: 16,79 fps

Sonnet Crescendo 7200 G3/400 (512k L2)
320x200: 110,63 fps
800x600: 25,35 fps

Can anybody benchmark Vampires 600 and 500+ right now?

So if you had tiers of Amiga CPU performance, it's starting to sound like this would be it:

68000/68020 no fast RAM (1-4x difference from bottom to top)
68020/68030 + Fast RAM  (i.e. big box amigas or accelerated small)
68040/68060
68040/68060 + PPC 603e/604e, Sonnet G3  or  Vampire2 FPGA
68040/68060 + Sonnet G4 @ 1 GHz PCI card
(Theoretical) 68080 Apollo ASIC @130nm or newer

Jan -

Here is a Youtube video from Dec 31 showing ADoom at 22.7 FPS on an 8-bit 640x480 screen...

    EXTERNAL LINK

The video doesn't mention which core, so I assume Gold 1 :)

The youtube link you provided got datestamp 1 January 2016, which means most likely a early Silver core if Im not mistaken.

Mr Niding -

You are indeed correct sir! What a goof I made.

It will make a nice point of reference to compare with Gold 1 and 2.

Cheers!

Could you also time 640x480? Interpolating the above values would yield something between 16 and 26 fps for the 604e@333 (100 MHz more than the maximum Phase5 offered) and 23 to 39 fps for the G3@400. Since the values interpolated from the low-res frame rate are already below the real ones for the high resolution, the expected frame rates for 640x480 should be a little bit higher than the midpoint of these intervals, e.g. 22 and 33 fps, respectively.

Looks like the Vampire is on par with the 604e clocked 3.5 times higher and probably again something like 30% below the G3 clocked more than 4 times higher.

Latest Vampire2 Core reaches at DOOM in 800x600 = 19.8 FPS.
So its somewhat faster than CyberstormPPC with PPC 604e@333MHz.
This is the normal 68k DOOM executable, its not tuned for AMMX or for APOLLO (yet).

With video playback the Vampire is even better.
RIVA video player which has some AMMX tunings, the VAMPIRE2 is more than twice as fast in video playback than the CyberstormPPC 604e@333MHz.

Both the Sonnet and Vampire play our Testvideo equally well.
And the Sonnet PCI with PPC-G3@400Mhz scores today a little bit faster than the Vampire in Doom.

Of course the tuning of the APOLLO core has just started.
And after GOLD1 comes GOLD2 and the there will come a GOLD3 release.

And is likely that the Vampire will beat the Sonnet PCI also in DOOM in the future.

Looking forward to FPU in Apollo so we can benchmark Quake vs PPC. Quake was written for Pentium or better as opposed to Doom thats from the 486-era.
