@gunnar
thank you for taking time to answer my personnal questions too.

it's nice to hear you agree on potential aros support.
i hope we can hear a little bit more about progress being done in the future.
like, the state of collaboration between teams, who do what, various advancements and optimisations..etc. depending on the time available to fill in monthly reports, i think they are great to follow, like a ship's captain log. we can get better picture of what is going on. i think i might not be the only one appreciating them.

anyway, as stated above, good work so far, best wishes for this project as it continues onward.

Wow! So that looks like roughly a 50% improvement in performance over the V2 (based on the numbers in the sysinfo screenshot on the Products page here).

The VAMP supports clock rate from x11 to x15

Like 68060 CPU cards were sold with 50MHz CPU but could be over clocked to 66MHz or 80MHz.

Please mind that the screenshots you refer to are from an "overclocked" V4SA.
The official release clock will be lower for safety reasons.

Ok I’m confused then.  The sysinfo you showed in this thread - was that an overclocked or not setup?  The one I was referring to as a comparison is the one found here: EXTERNAL LINK  Which I believe was the one from the vampire 2.

But then over in the Sysinfo thread you posted a sysinfo capture that shows even faster numbers than the capture in this thread.

Which is it? Ie: which one is the set of performance numbers we should expect to see when we get the actual V4SA in our hands

One thing I have to say about this project - you guys really need to learn to be consistent with your messaging.  Seems like every video we see ends up sparking more questions and confusion than answers.

Dude, I appreciate your enthusiasm but you are seriously overthinking things :)

Team's (very precious) time is much better used for actual work on the projects instead on producing an elaborate Bollywood presentation with singing and dancing :)

You are, of course, free to make a dazzling YouTube video promotion for the Vampire cards. As you can see, you'll get all the necessary info here.

Cheers!

@lordaga
could you go grab a book or a toy and get busy elsewhere quietly please.

Yes as mentioned.
Our "sales" clock rates are x11 and x12.

The screenshot in this thread was from x15 clock.
This means this in an overclocked core for the brave and fearless.
  x15 = 106 MHz

The official shipped clock are x11=78 MHz and x12=85 MHz.

Will it be publicly avail, and what is needed to support the extra heart - a fan, improved PSU?

The Vamp is cool, no extra heat is generated.

Nice. Any other limits? Compatibility issues?
Or any Vamp V4 can go "black edition" 100Mhz+?

FPGa cores can be tweaked over time and Vamp results varied
in V2 generation from silver to gold to actual 2.11 cores, and might again with GOLD3 core. Each gen of cores had different clock speed versions, from safe fail X10 (~77Mhz) to overclocked and black edition X13-X15 (90+ Mhz). V4 offers some more overclocking space, so X15 core is great (as of my past remark).

No, I can not guarantee this atm.
We aim for official sale of 85MHz.

We have test cores with 100 Mhz and 106 Mhz - but these are for testing. I can not guarantee that we will have these officially.

Then its wisest to show 85Mhz results :)

Hope some Black editions will come one day!

Also, thanks for round up of answers.

At some point of future (when a lot of jobs are done), please make V4 PMMU-FPU compatibile m68k kernel. Some Linux apps would be nice to have, even modest performance could be expected. One

AROS Vision and AmiKit XE await for V4 SA too, so software choices might increase after V4 on sales.

This threat shows the overclock potential
not the official minimum sold speed.

I think this info is also relevant and interesting for people.

If you search the internet for AMIGA or ATARI benchmarks results of  68060 CPU cards then you for sure will find very many overclocked CPUs too.

Exactly, this is what I’m getting at with standardizing your messaging - don’t show what you can’t or don’t actively plan to deliver.  It confuses people and gives unreasonable expectations.  Don’t show anything you don’t plan to support and deliver. Have consistent messaging across the board. If you are going to show something outside the norm, be VERY clear  upfront.

Again, Linux is not our focus.
Also PPC is not our goal.
Do not expect this.

Hello Apollo Team,

I am a very happy user of vampire v2. I have been following your work since 2013 more or less, when vamp 1 happened. I have to say, what you achieved is AMAZING. I feel in the position of giving an advice to everybody that is waiting for something that may never happen: Enjoy what is available.

I am only 25, i started to use amigas around 5 years ago. My expectations to have a 060+ level amiga were close to none for me, just an impossible to afford wet dream. Now I have the fastest amiga in the world sitting on my desk, and I can only say THANK YOU for making it possible.

That said, i have got a very quick question, Is GOLD2 planned for vampire 500 v4?

Cheers

No :)

But you could rethink your attitude. This one wont get you many friends and/or support.

Again, you are free to help the project in any way. If you can't create software/hardware you can make presentations and reviews. Just criticizing people and their work without doing anything yourself reminds me of a certain bear.

Agreed, but neither was with many ARM,PPC based projects, but in the end it often saved the day compared to e.g. OS4 or even Android native apps. m68k Linux development has ceased, 080 might give some fresh air there. If you dont have resources to do it, share information with someone who is. I would pay for such updated m68k distro with v4 enabled kernel. Some decent debian based distro would do the magic, especially if bundled with an office and browser better then AROS 68k ones.

Other nice workaround for some productivity apps would be even more native Mac 68k support (Fusion is nice, but it can be even faster).

Third hard way is bringing AROS x64 backports and a strong and updated AROS. This seems most likely. And AROS apps recompiled too.

My major enjoyment is AmigaOS revival, but as with OS4, having no updated native apps can just kill both decent hardware and even decent OS. 199x apps are nice, but have their own limits.

At the other hand, kudos for native Atari support.

  That all about that.
  Thanks for being clear.

Come on, this is not a commercial project, it is driven by a very strong intrinsic motivation. There needs to be room for fun! Furthermore, I'm pretty sure the team will TRY to make fast compiles in addition to the standard cores. But sometimes this will require a lot of time which may not be worth it so overclock cores will be just a bonus which will not work stably on all FPGAs. Nonetheless it is fun to see what the core may achieve. After all we have had 25 years of overclocked 060 scores, no?

Can I overclock (as easily as other 68060 CPU cards you are talking about) the Vampire by myself if the faster cores won't be officially available?

Is it going to be sold for money? Then it’s a commercial product. Granted it’s by a small team but that is why it’s even more important to be clear in their messaging.

It’s one thing for a customer to show benchmarks on a part they overclocked - hey cool on them. When the people making it show it it sets up expectations that customers will get that which might or might not be reasonable.
