Gray bar = Atari Falcon 060@100mhz
Blue bar = Vampire V2 Gold 2.7 HardFPU
Green bar = Atari Falcon 030
Red bar = Vampire V2 Gold 2.0

I thought the fastest Atari clone is a Coldfire-based FireBee, not some 060 machine... EXTERNAL LINK

Except the coldfire test is done with coldfire compiled version, it is not 68K compatible. No old FPU 68K Atari software can run under coldfire unfortunately

Could we have the motherboard perf value? Could you send me the .ABH result? I think 68881 version should give the best result.

thanks

Gold 2.7 HardFPU goal is a full HW cover of the 040/060 FPUs, that's why they gives the best result.

This is AWESOME!

Is it possible to run Netsurf on your setup, Simo?

With my Gold 2.5 core, all i get is a "this program
needs an 68881 or higher FPU" message.

Yes, Arti's NetSurf-nofpu build works for you: EXTERNAL LINK

Sorry,

i wanted to know if the ATARI build that hides in e:/applications/netsurf on my Amitari FreeMiNT works
on your machine with gold 2.7 hard-fpu...

Build works, but TCP/IP stack under FreeMINT doesnt. It doesnt work with current Amiga net solutions, hope v4 boards onboard LAN will bring more peace and prosperity

Not really, FireBee runs precompiled FreeMint for ColdFire (which isnt fully m68k compatibile sadly) and thus is in same position as Vampire - able to run just software that does not bang Atari chipset. So technically its no Atari, but is fastest FreeMint machine.

Its all academical, and and I doubt that due to 266Mhz freq. Vampire V4 cant compete to it. But once Vamp reaches 266Mhz, even FireBee will be down. Per clock, 080 is really excellent design.

And FireBee is built on same basis: ColdFire CPU + FPGA

Vamp4 is faster than Coldfire in many areas but not in all.

Yes Coldfire ASIC is higher clocked.
But looking at clockrate can easily mislead you.

A Coldfire is not as good as 68060 or APOLLO - clock by clock.
Coldfire is very restricted in instruction length with disallowed many EA modes. This makes Coldfire often need several instructions doing the equivalent of one 68K instruction.

For example FPU:
68K you can use flexible instruction like the below:
  FADD.S #1.8,fp0
Easily adding an immediate float to a floating point register.

The Coldfire can because the harsh instruction length limit not encode this. The Coldfire will need to use several instruction to get to do an equivalent operation.

This example makes it easy to understand that in doing real work
even today the VAMP 2 is for many task already faster than the fastest 260 MHz Coldfires.

Both Vamp and Coldfire are on a similar speed level in many areas.
And both are strong enough to make light operating systems like ATARI TOS and AMIGA OS - fly super fast.

No doubt about it. I am delighted of per Mhz Apollo performance,
its one of the highest ever seen. Problem is only we are not beyond 100Mhz. But one day ... :-)

I'd still like one day to drop a Vampire in my Mac SE .. I bet that would be interesting..

For your info, SAGA does support ATARI hardware Planar GXF modes.
This means you can display ATARI ST modes with SAGA.

So I am intersted, is there a plan to support a bit more ATARI ST and Mac Classic HW features in v4 so machine becomes in Atari case - more ST compatibile then current Atari clones (would be great Atari factor!) and as Eric asks, a straightforward macOS Classic bootable with no emulation?

Even I am Amigan with not much experience on TOS and MacOS, I respect the competition and am not to 16/32 bit era wars of supermacy. But would love to abuse Vamp to retro max!

Note that ability to drop Vamp to Ataris and original Macs is dependable on space constrains and CPU connector.

Notable thing is that both Atari and Mac compatibility give not only retro feel, but enables some software otherwise unavail to Amiga.

Yes VAMP can run as ATARI ST.

Impressive results.

So when it will be possible to plug a Vampire V4 into a 1040ST, switch on and it boots?

Best one can say as no team member, to public info avail,
no one has ever tried. 68k socket is there, Vamp could fit in similar fashion to A500 model (and A500 model should be recommended due to external fast IDE too).

There has been discussion long time ago
But it seems it was stucked at interest (and I see you were active part of it).

  P.S.
Question remains how would Vamp handle no Amiga chipset and how would handle Atari I/O. Maybe GOLD3 is a minimum + some support for ST I/O. We ll see what team says.

From my side interest is not stucked. But many at the Atari forums don't believe Apollo Team's announcement long time ago to do it. For them it's a kind of varporware. If the vampire just would boot with original ST chipset that would be a sign of life to this announcement. But more than photos with a vamp plugged into an ST board do not exist.
