Questions and Answers for AROS AMIGA OS

AROS IDE Performance Much Higher Than AMIGA OS 3

Aros has the reputation of being more advanced and having more new features than the older Amiga OS 3.
While at the same time Aros has the reputation of being slower than the highly tuned Amiga OS3. As AROS is written is C and not as highly tuned as the old Amiga OS which was written in parts in ASM.

And this reputation of Aros used to be true.
If you looked for example at the IO/IDE speed.
Popular tools like SYSINFO could measure a speed of 11-12 MB/sec on AROS while reaching 12-13 MB/sec on Amiga OS 3 - using the same hardware. So Amiga OS 3 was faster and more optimized.

Some of you will know that our goal is to change this.
Some people said our goal is to ambitious and Aros can not outrun the tuned ASM Amiga OS3.

In some areas AROS now outclasses OS 3.
After cleaning up the IDE code of AROS - AROS now reaches a nice 17MB/sec IDE speed on the same hardware.

This means AROS does the same job now 30% faster than AMIGA OS 3.XYZ

I think this improvement is great and I look to continue this tuning in other areas.

Good job !
And yes - constatntly improved AROS might ba a blessing for Amiga community. Just imagine no more legal fights! AROS 'just' need more developers and a (many) bit(s) of love.

It's really great how seriously you guys take this stuff.

Everyday, I drive past the recycling station where I dropped off my Amiga 2000 with 8MB fast RAM (built chip by chip) and thousands of games (legit and cracked... sshhh). This was about eight years. I so wish that I had known that there was still a thriving Amiga community. And the price to replace the hardware alone is crazy but all of those games! Enough of the memory lane stuff. I did have a question.

Is updating the OS without flashing going to be a priority in the coming 12 months or so?

This is awesome news and I can't believe the advancements being made.

The Amiga community needs this, it gives it away forward. It's great being able to play old games etc, but we need to start adding more "modern" features.

I am glad I purchased a V4SA, just the wait for it get here! I can't wait to start using it, my goal is to have it as a daily driver.

Keep on going! d:)

I can't speak for the Apollo team, only give my opinion, but being a very happy V4 owner and witnessing the progress, I would say the priority is to get the best Amiga experience.  This involves improving both the core and ApolloOS (AROS branch).

My impression from everything I've read is both of these areas are constantly being improved,  So imagine flash-less updates may not be here for a while yet, which in my mind is great because it means my V4 is getting better with each one.  Faster, more compatible with old software, better with new software, more features etc.

Also, we don't have to use a USB blaster to update the core; there is a command line tool which makes the update very easy.  However, it's still advisable to have a USB blaster just in case the update fails and bricks the V4.  The blaster will come to the rescue.

Are you thinking of getting a V4?  I would say, if you are missing your Amiga, the V4 is a great replacement.  If you do get one, then there is a great multi boot tool available for free by a forum member (Willem Drijver).  With this you can have multiple Amiga OS's installed on a CF memory card and easily select between them.  For example, I have ApollOS and CoffinOS (AmigaOS3.9), so have the benefits of both.  Coffin is great because it's a very stable Amiga OS with masses of software pre-installed. ApolloOS is great because it's being improved all the time and will be tuned for the V4 for maximum performance.

You know you  want one :-)

20 MB/sec is a fantastic score for IDE performance of any Amiga.

write speed needs a kick in the pants on all cards updating software is a slow process

I guess the cache is a kinda reading ahead cache ?
with prefetch-like mechanism to start reading next blocks and hide latency from cpu pov?

The above scores are real normal reading - without cache and without any tricks.

With diskcache enabled the score are much higher.

After more IDE-driver tuning, we are now at nearly twice the speed of OS 3.
