@Martin

Does that matter? He tweaks OS's (AOS and AROS), and gains knowledge about skinning and using xyz software.

Wether or not he ever purchases a Vampire doesnt affect me or you the slightest, but we can use his knowledge to our advantage.

Win win as far as I can see.

Unless I mis-read, gunnar was saying it would be nice to see it running on real hardware, no (A4000)? So yeah, it matters. Doesn't have to be a vampire, but that would be nice of course :)

im not sure why its inappropriate to let people know if someone has put together some distribution, even if its not optimized towards a particular platform. its not like everybody is being forced into it. its an option, everybody needs to decide if its worth to consider for them. and then they can report on it back here. but dismissing it just for the sake of it, or because something was said or not said on some forum isnt a valid reason.

(speaking as someone, who always pushed for common ground of software that still runs on lower end amigas, including aros)

@Martin
I'm not against anyone, I'm a 65 year old user, Amiga OS fan but also other OS.

At home I have many Amiga I haven't used for 30 years (A4000/060, 2 A1200/030, 2 A600 HD, A500Plus, 2 A500, 2 CD32 SX32).

I have fun with WinUAE because it gives me the possibility to use all the Amiga models and all the Amiga Hardware without cluttering up my desk and then because at my age I'm no longer the head for these things.

My AROS One 68k can work everywhere because it's based on the latest Nightly Build, to make it work on Vampire or real Amiga you just need to add Driver and Device.

Unfortunately I don't have a vampire and no Italian user with Vampire wanted to collaborate because I don't love WinUAE, which is wrong because WinUAE is an ally of Vampire, useful to speed up many procedures.

OK, fine - i'll bite.

Link me to an image and I'll video it on real hardware. I have V4SA and a 68060 machine with RTG graphics running at 100Mhz.

[EDIT] Never mind. Got it - will try it tonight after work and upload some video to YouTube

Ok thanks for understanding ;)
  Too bad you can't try my AfA One too (it's no longer distributed).

The one potential problem I see here is that this AROS68k distro will likely include stuff and settings that will not run acceptably on anything but a non-existent GHz 68k processor. I think there was this Quake3 Arena thing shown already. Hence, some real-world tests outside of JIT-emulation seems to be advisable.

i understand that everybody's usual ambition is to pull an own independent project. though seeing the amount of effort going in what is already a number of distinct aros distributions, which apparently start to compete with each other and as i see the users start to ask themselves which is the right and official one.

i think it would be beneficial to focus the effort more on something common. i have already mentioned it to amiga user. and i would consider it in everybody's interest.

That's not it, it's not JIT that makes a difference on Quake3 but WinUAE, mine was just an experiment on AROS 68k, WinUAE has an "Warp3D.library"(Wazp3D)dedicata that .ddl windows allows you to perform a "Hardware" emulation.
This hardware emulation also benefits OS3:

I don't care about WinUAE. If I wanted to run AROS on an x86, I'd run it native. The question remains: which real Amiga could run Q3 in a meaningful way? Designing an AROS68k distribution that cannot run in anything else but an emulator doesn't make sense.

  Everyone has a PC at home but not all PCs can run the latest 3D games.
  My AROS One is a "standard" Nightly Build embellished and configured and can work wherever this system is supported.

@Nixus

I dont care that you dont care. Tone matters. It seems like too many computer related people are on the spectrum, and have issues with people approaching their hobby from a different angle than them.

@Amiga User
Stay. Ignore the negativity. Some people are better at relating to assemblers than to people.

In the world there are too many bad people, on an Italian forum (amigapage) they told me that here someone had to kick me out, so I decided to withdraw from the scene my AROS One, now it's no longer available for download.

@nixus
thats a general problem with the distributions these days. you might as well be upset about amikit or olafs aros vision. as its been said above the personal differences matter sometimes by tiny fraction. as you know, even if i support vamp, id consider my a4k/060/50 a relevant system as well. hell id go down to 030 as a common denominator. but we will never get that far if everybody is quarreling.

Well, I said I'd give it a spin and I did, but there's nothing to show I'm afraid.

Initially it wouldn't boot, I just got an error but honestly, I expected that. So, off to WinUAE where not surprisingly it booted right up. I added VControl and the latest rom from the nightlies (joined to 1MB) and adjusted the SS to soft kick this rom. Now it booted, but I already knew what would happen since I had a look while I was booted into it from WinUAE.

The screen was very low res (320x240? 320x200? at 8bpp?) and there was corruption on the left hand side together with a corrupt pointer.

I say this didn't surprise me. Well, yeah, I can see in WinUAE that there are no video drivers for real hardware in here and no SAGA drivers or monitor type.

So, not to be put off I grabbed the LHA that I have from (I think) the 14th January and I copied in the driver files and the monitor files. Problem here is that I'm by no means an expert and I strongly suspect that it's not the way to do this, or that there is more to it that just copying a dozen files.

Now it just boots to a grey screen. But honestly, it booted further than my previous efforts, so well done for that. Shame there isn't a version with some drivers to be able to see how it performs.

you might note that this is only partly the responsibility of the distribution maintainers. surely, he should have added the softckick line at the beginning of the s-s. but we still havent implemented fool proof way of having proper drivers loaded for proper hardware, even if they are third party as p96 ones. also some screen corruption and slow 8bp rendering, especially transparency are in house, problem that still needs to be solved.

  please do not shoot the messenger and also consider that there is currently very limited work force, busy almost around the clock. as you can see for yourself on slack.

Nobody is shooting any messengers - well, not me anyway!

My post was meant to be mostly positive. Obviously it would be more positive if it had worked out better, but it still wasn't all bad as far as I'm concerned.

What tool did you joined the ROMs with?

The ROMs are updated periodically, you had to use those included in the Ditstro which was of the same perod as the creation of the distro.

On WinUAE did you use my config file?

Ah, ok. No and no. I will try the config file and I wil use the ROMs from the distro rather than the 14th Jan. No real problem with WinUAE incidentally, but i can use the config file anyway.

PS: I joined them inside Amiga OS 3.9 using the join command a few nights back.

The ROMs of the 14th still work, however, the opposite will not work !
