Think of the difference between cassette tape and CD audio.

| We don't need any audio demos - just the AHI driver :)

No, the 8 channels refer to the 8 instruments that can play at any time where Paula has 4 channels which is mixed in hardware into two output channels. I am pretty certain that PAMELA still just has stereo output (=2 channels). To actually output surround sound, they would need to pay to get a license from either DTS or Dolby..tango one wrote:

It will probably sound close to how my GUS Classic sounds like, although just with fewer channels. The GUS has 32 channels mixed in full 44.1 kHz stereo. It sounds generally quite good even with MODs made for Paula, although a few MODs does benefit from the distortion/noise that Paula adds.

AFAIK the GUS could only do 19Khz with 32 channels. 44Khz could AFAIK only be reached with less channels.PAMELA is not limited to 44Khz, but supports higher sampling rates too.

Ah true, only 14 channels at 44.1 kHz from the wiki link. Still a good comparison and not many people had complaints with the audio performance of the GUS cards. :)

| OCS / ECS and AGA did have PAULA with 4 channels.PAULA supports 4 channels with 8Bit samples * 6Bit Volume = 14 total PAULA supported 28Khz Sampling frequencies Since ECS is was possible to double the sample frequency to 56Khz max. 4 channel allowed the nice amiga tracker mods. And also allowed nice effect in games. Of course when doing bot music and SND FX at the same time one had to find a compromise. Games often used 2-3 channel for music and 1-2 channel for SND FX For "AAA" chipset it was planed to have 8 channel. And also to support 16Bit samples. 8 channel give of course a lot more freedom for music and SND FX in parallel in games. PAMELA basically gives you now what "AAA" wanted to give us. 8 channel 8bit or 16bit samples * 6bit Volume = 22Bit AUDIO (internal calculation done in 24bit)

| This is freaking awesome! Stereo separation is also feature I always wanted. I wonder what software will be there to support the new features...

I remember using Octamed (v5 I think) in which you could add more than 8 channels, but I think it was meant to be used through AHI; I'm not sure.

Not without some software that would use them - I believe on any OS 3.software 8+ ch would be done by CPU, and yes, proper AHI and MHI drivers would help.

As so many things Amiga, this merely needs somebody that writes a driver...

| If octamed or octamed soundstudio has an open source mod player, this could be used to write a player that supports 8 channels playing on Pamela in games being made. Then we could ASM the chosen Pamela channels for SFX

Mind you will need software able to exploit it. Hardware is just step one.Note that DTS is not the same as 8 instruments sound Its NOT 7.1 sound but enhanced stereo that can play 8 instruments (that is ment by 8ch in Amiga sound, as it was 4ch with Classics) "No, the 8 channels refer to the 8 instruments that can play at any time where Paula has 4 channels which is mixed in hardware into two output channels.
