@Mikester RX7:  "In my opinion the move to PowerPC is a failure"

At the time it looked like a good move. 68K was dead. PowerPC ecosystem was good and Amiga OS and Morph OS already had a history of working with PowerPC accelerators.

PowerPC is slowly failing out from underneath them. And that's too bad.

Even PA Semi had a pretty cool roadmap until Apple came along. Heck I had even started discussions with PA Semi but we won't go there.

Now Apollo core is the shiny new thing. :)

it might have looked as a good move (for some) in the nineties of the last century of the past millennium, but even then it wasnt. even justifying it with mindlessly following in apple footsteps is pure idiocy. ppc acceleratirs added significantly up upon the price of amiga hardware and after commodore downfall led to final remaining user exodus. the attempt to suply the remaining hand full with a custom ppc boards for years to come led mostly to other technical disasters, as we remember. it has not been solved till today, even though, against all odds, some reach uncle appeared out of nowhere to save the platform. after almost twenty years there is no reasonably priced, stable, logical and software supported ppc platform. all there is, doesnt really fit together and probably never will, being a trade of on dreams and the reality of available means. even the best move morphos team did, to support cheap obsolete foreign hardware was refused on part of os4. its users are still forced to refrain to more less unsupported options, best case winuae, just in order to be able to boot into it. thats the whole history in a few words.

I also do not see that FPGA harms PPC sales, at least not much. 68k community is not interested in PPC.

I think it will considerably.  What is the estimate # of X1000 units sold?  300-500, maybe?  I think they will be lucky to sell 100-200 X5000s.  If you are a PowerPC user already, will you continue to buy this high priced hardware for minimal performance improvements (mostly because of the state of the OS)?  Who will buy used X1000s?

If you are still a 68K user the recent FPGA products will make you think twice about moving to PowerPC, especially with the high PowerPC prices.

Tabor hopes to lure 68K users that are on the edge, but I don't think it will succeed - especially now.

AmigaOne PowerPC is not attracting users from outside the current Amiga community.

Based on the response after yours - it sounds like Hyperion is playing the game that they think 68K users will eventually go to OS 4.x..  which is definitely not true for me, especially with hardware like this awesome Apollo core..

Exactly!

I think that Cloanto has the license to improve AmigaOS3.1, because they already did it and they are selling it to the (68K) classic market.

So, I wonder if anyone has discussed 68K improvements with Cloanto?

it looks like cloanto is playing minimax strategy even more than hyperion. minimal effort - maximal gain. while nothing wrong with it, they at least dont pretend to be the futre of amiga, i wouldnt depend on an entity with this attitude too much, in particular wouldnt expect from them will and competence for essential improvements.

Improvments, improvments, improvments! What exactly improvments do you want in AmigaOS???

Cloanto is selling the Kickstart Roms 3.1 and the OS3.1 Disks or the 3.1 CF Card cheaper than you get them used on ebay. Thats not for milking money. Everyone I talked with is saying that Michael Battalina is a man you can talk with and that he loves Amiga. He has nothing to lose. Better Amiga OS = better OS in his WinUAE.

As the topic is about license for P96, it seems for me that there must be a P96 license in WinUAE, as RTG is implented. This would mean, that there has been a agreement Cloanto/P96 in the past?!

im not saying cloanto is not trustworthy or that you cant talk to them, just they have not done anything by themselves in the past, so id simply assume its not their area of interest.

moving windows outta the screen especially on low res amiga screens is pretty useful. easiness of installation. one basic setup for all hardware, working out of the box. no juggling with preocessos support libraries. simple decent editor built in instead of memacs. usb, lan and rtg support built in. and so on and so on..

And this would have been killing software for all Amiga Modells in Standard. So with Vampire there is a new player and there will be a different demand than before. With newbies and old users (hopefully) coming back there wil be demand for a simple solution  with the functions you remarked and more, to support today demand: Mp3 playback, youtube, chatting, some people want retro gaming (C64, Amiga, Sega, Nintendo, Sony, PC), DVD Playback, Internet, Email.

But for this - you need a powerful CPU. Maybe we need OS 3.1, maybe AROS can be the successor. I don´t know. As we are leaving the topic, I dont want to say more abot that.

Does Amiga Inc still own any rights in classic Amiga OS or OS4 or did they sell them all to Cloanto/Hyperion/A.N.Other? I remember there being some question about Amiga Inc having rights to use kickstart roms with emulated games they were trying to sell after Cloanto acquired copyrights from them in 2012. Amiga Inc have little use for Amiga OS as they don't make any hardware and probably didn't see 68K hardware ever making a comeback. Following the court battle with Hyperion, Amiga Inc probably gave up on the Amiga operating systems and just kept hold of the Amiga brand for licencing.

When the code leaked recently the official statement came from Hyperion, not Cloanto, maybe that's a clue?

In any case, I found this part of the statement particularly hilarious:
"While the original leak seems to stem from someone outside of the active community, it is even more sad to see quite some of the remaining active users happily participate in distributing this unauthorised copy, compromising years of development work and all possible future versions of AmigaOS and therefore biting the hand that feeds them against all common sense and in blatant violation of copyright."

Please not get personal.

Its Hyperions own decision to go for PPC or support 68k, or not.
They have the right to decide this.

Ok, I hear you - actually I dont have a problem that they wont *actively help* with 68k as they got a license for wb3.1 in order to develop os 4 PPC. I get that.
I did not realise however, that this would give them some kind of mandate to decide what happens to 68k development of 3.1 and even obstruct potential development.

Can i ask a quick question as im a newbie.. i have ordered my kickstart 3.1 rom for a A600
I understand kipper2k has been asking for the licence or a photo of the rom or something when we put in a request to purchase the vampire2.. what number does he need the number on the unit or does it come with a licence? Thanks in advance

Not sure if he has changed the way he handles ROM license lately, but a while ago we were asked to grab a ROM image and upload it to his FTP (or maybe email). Yuu can use free utilities on Aminet to grab an image of the ROM in your Amiga.
Procedure was described step by step on AmiBay here:

hi all I'm having issues grabbing the Rom file from the Amiga Forever CD I have the 2016 edition

I'm trying to grab the below Rom to upload via FTP

KS ROM v3.1 (A500,A600,A2000) rev 40.63 (512k)

when i follow the below directions

EXTERNAL LINK
(I am using Win7 and downloaded gfsw.exe)

and use this program via windows to grab the Rom it does not show the correct Rom due to the encryption

Size: 524,299
  CRC-32: E4D58065
  MD-5: c3e114cd3b513dc0377a4f5d149e2dd9
-------------------- FILE SIGNATURE COMPLETE --------------------

another poster listed the below

Do I get this right:

For owners of the AmigaForever CDs

Simply setup a A600 System in the Emulator.
Than use a Romgrabber inside the emulated Amiga and rename the rom-file as wished and upload to ftp

Yes?

but I'm having trouble getting kick2f or any other ROM Grabber to work.

I need some guidance I've been all through the forums but all the instructions are quiet vauge.
I have read that you need to load winuae then run one of the these grabbers but i cant get it to work and searching google so far I have not come up with the answer.

I'm not understanding how to get these programs into the winuae emulator to grab the Rom.

I need to do it this way because my A600 is currently not working

any help would be appreciated

If you XOR it with the key file that came with Amiga Forever that will "unencrypt" it. I'm not sure why they bothered
