Considering how utterly fractured the "AMIGA Users Collective" is, could the Vampire II become the MOST USED AMIGA model out there sometime soon?

Like, before the end of 2017, for instance?

Just tossing it out there.

It depends on various things, first how many we will be able to build.
I must say that interest is still high so in reality lot of people who owns Amiga want's it. That's good because it will lower the prices of other accelerators at the end and our plan is to do something with our prices by the end of the year. But that depends on various things. Lowering prices - complete Amiga scene - covered and that is important because software development. As you can see on aminet there are more and more games/tolls who require 68080 and that's good. Our problems for becoming most used accelerator are also related to connectors, because Vampire 1200 could be build 6 years ago and imagine where would we be now if that happened. I personally think that nothing serious happened regarding that matter because for so many years we worked without profit. That profit could be invested into molds and finally Vampire 1200 could happen and then we could talk about "most used amiga model of accelerator". What's done is done we move forward and yes in 2017. new concept will be used by most of the people.

Vampire accelerators are already number one in the hearts and minds of Amiga 68k users and many Atari 68k users (despite the name. I'll post about that later). This project proves that with hard work and dedication that it CAN be done! The Apollo Team have already succeeded.

The goal should be to put as many of the Apollo products in the hands of as many end users as possible by appealing to more than one group such as Amiga 68k, Atari 68k, Mac 68k, and others we haven't thought about. A few "free" accelerators strategically sent to well placed Amiga developers would help to generate free publicity. But the greatest factor in the coming popularity of Apollo products will be the energy and creativity of Amiga 68k owners, those like me that own more than one Amiga. We will be repeat customers buying V600, v500, V1200, V4000, standalone board and other variations! Providing a version for Amiga 3000/4000 would make Apollo products all inclusive. Soon all unaccelerated Amigas will be accelerated by Apollo products!

The Apollo team and everyone else is going to be pleasantly surprised at the large number of purchasers for the V1200 and the standalone board. I believe that there are many Amiga 1200 owners out there who are desperately waiting for an upgrade. Many who don't even own an A1200 will buy one just to purchase an Apollo accelerator card. That seems crazy, but crazy is good. :-)

When the Super AGA chipset matures and the standalone board is offered for sale the Apollo Team will have made history by producing the first new Amiga 68k chipset since AGA many years ago!

With the Apollo System (68080 + Super AGA) there will be many possibilities! In the future a PCI version doesn't seem so crazy! Build it and we'll find a use for it. Imagine sales going from a few thousand to a few million! The future with the Apolllo looks very bright. Thank you Apollo Team for the hard work and dedication.

Vampire 2 will be the standard soon! People will be saying, "This software (or game) runs ok, but how well will it run on Vampire 2?"

Soon every Amiga 68k user will have a Vampire 2! It will be as ubiquitous for Amigas as compact flash cards and sd cards are now!

It depends. Some semi purist democoders are not very intrested in Vampire, Britelite being the more active poster on the topic
(And I love his demos, so nothing but love for the guy).
They (some democoders) say they like the 060 hardware limit as a roof for demos, and some even stick to unexpanded A500 as their selfimposed limit, as to force themselves to optimize their code.

I assume Majstas and BigGuns reply to that would be that more people should be creative with the Vampires, not only playing games :)

@Niding

Well the biggest problem most scene coders have is that they feel like coding for SAGA is like writing demo for PC.
But with the integration of ECS and AGA i hope their view will change and we'll see some awesome jaw dropping 080 demos!

you dont require vampire for playing amiga games, at least crushing majority of them. and i think a proper anser to this is: "people should simply do with vampire what they please to".

Which highlights the need for a reference platform.

Targeting specific system configurations would only further the degree of fragmentation in a small market - if you're developing products and services they need to be for Amigas.

And while Majsta and Gunnar may not have anticipated this happening, they are carrying the momentum to help make this happen.

Providing much needed new hardware doesn't cause further fragmentation or division in the Amiga community. I don't understand the connection there. Also, as end users it would be difficult for us to convince commercial companies to re-invest in Amiga OS 68k just because we feel they should. But the numbers WILL make a huge difference! We can show our support by buying Apollo products. If by next year total sales reach 10,000 or 20,000 or even 30,000 maybe these companies and small groups of developers will change their minds. Who in the business world would intentionally pass up an opportunity to make a profit?

The single most important thing we can do to help the Amiga community as a whole, and ourselves in the process, is to start a positive trend. I assume there are many software developers on this forum, so instead of creating software for just one OS such as Amiga OS 68k, why not make the extra effort as developers to compile for ALL Amiga-like OS'es: Amiga OS 68k, Amiga OS 4.1, Morph OS, AROS (All Flavors)? Maybe this trend will catch on? That doesn't apply to hardware or other sources that are proprietary. Just everyday, conventional software.

Sharing code for Riva, Fast IDE, etc. may be positive steps in the right direction. Whether it's Open Source, or Closed Source make it available to everyone. I wouldn't mind buying a commercial version of Papyrus Office if it were available for Amiga OS 68k, or AROS 68k. But continuing to argue with one another doesn't solve anything.

you seem to skip on fact that it is not all about profit, in fact probably the least part ot it is.

in many cases it is about private interests. at least it is when it comes to motivation, when developing as i observe. it has nothing to do which option is prevalent at a time. people are simply coding what and ´for a target platform they are interested in.

the rest is about ego. i have repeatedly seen peole claiming they wiould not come over, even if the other fraction prevailed. instead they would simply quit. and im not bashing this behaviour. in fact it might apply to me as well. most of my interests in amiga are set, i dont feel urge to extend them to or substitute with anything similar..

What would be the benefit of the clsed source OS 4.1 for our Vampire V2's?
Aren't we better served with pure AROS and/or a hybrid OS3.x and AROS?. There is more software available for AROS/OS3.x then there is for OS4.1.

To speed up the full support of the Vampire V2 in AROS I'm willing to pay for the development of it rather than paying a license fee for the closed source OS 3.x or 4.1. For example the Apollo team could add an AROS support fee to their profucts so that the extra cash can be applied to the development of full Vampire Support in AROS.

+1 on this! AROS has pretty interesting developments as of lately, with the 64bit and SMP support. Imagine a dual Apollo Core SMP setup with AROS in the future, that would be pretty cool. =)

Apollo products including the standalone board are going to be very popular and very successful. We will need some new, optimized software for our new hardware whether it be updated Amiga OS 68k libraries for OS 3.5/3.9 or updated AROS 68k.

There are many talented and creative programmers, some on this forum, that might be willing to develop this for us. The Apollo Team have already gotten the Boing Ball rolling, so to speak. Graphics and video programs optimized with AMMX, and other such enhanced apps are needed.

I envision at least two ongoing projects: Amiga (68k) for Vampire, and AROS (68k) for Vampire. If we need to incentivize new software through Bounties I'm willing to contribute. So let's make Vampire number one!

Indeed the advancement in AROS is the big asset here.
Imagine as you mentioned an 64bit Amiga OS with SMP and add to that an ASIC 68080. Burn baby burn :D

Imagine also getting our Vampire with an OS that support it from the ground. Every Vampire V2 feature in it is accessible when you start the OS for the first time.

And people that like tuning can still fiddle around like crazy if they want :)

remains to be seen if aros multiprocessing wouldnt break 68k software. x64 doesnt fear that. almost everything smp is kept outside of 68k arch specific kernel code.

An AROS compile on 68080.... wouldn't that be able to break the "2 gigabyte" glass ceiling that AOS suffers from?!?!!!!

:-DDD

Yes. That's good if they can make it work on 68k hardware. I tried to run it in WinUAE but it stopped at the DOS screen. It may require a couple more hours of tweaking to work. I can't imagine that no one has a WinUAE configuration file for AROS Vision?! It was hard to find too. I hope that it eventually is tightly integrated with Apollo 68080 + SAGA and I hope that it will install easily and just work! I hope, now that we have full color RTG and higher resolutions that the AROS team give it the same look and feel as Icaros Desktop. That's a nice layout with lots of screen real estate. In due time maybe they'll work it out. One issue may be AROS ROMs and how they'll work with the MAPROM.

When it is tightly integrated with Apollo products and when AROS 68k can then take full advantage of everything that the 68080 and Super AGA have to offer including Fast IDE, MDMA, AMMX, and graphics, shouldn't it have a new name? AROS Ignition, or AROS Fusion? I like the last one since it will be a fusion of Apollo Core and AROS! That's Hot stuff! :-)
