So let's imagine what the standalone motherboard would look like.

The standalone board is already there.
Its fully done and we are testing the boards at the moment.
So the feature 'wish' list for the stand alone board is closed, at least for this generation.

Cool, without revealing any features could you share info about the physical size of the board? Is it a common form factor or entirely custom design /size?

Wow very interesting announcement.
When will the details be shared with us?
Like Daniel I'm eager to know the form factor!

Like I said "The future is here and it looks bright" :D

Talk about a teaser. Going to get a lot of curious people prying now.
I should lay low, my vampire board is on the way, that should keep me busy.

Just some wishful thinking on my part. Great news about the standalone motherboard. I'm curious about the board layout and size as well. I suppose it will be a scaled up version of the Vampire V2 accelerator with some added components. So maybe Mini-ITX size up to 8"x8" but I'll have to wait to see what the design team has come up with. If it's anything like I suspect, it will be quite nice! Looking forward to seeing it in action at some point in the future! Great job!!

With the configuration of the Standalone motherboard locked in, any details regarding spesification, performance and port layout?

The ONLY person unhappy about the standalone, (I call it) Succubus, is, the PERSON that DOES NOT BUY ONE!!!!!!

!! RICHTER SCALE 9.9!!

I thought that they just only now were working on the A1200 Vampire 2.

THIS IS going to be TOTALLY EXCELLENT!!

Soooooo, the price will be a bit on the high end.

But, when you weigh all of the features/benefits; the Vampire is impossible,... ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to RESIST!

1. Sma!ll

2. Imagine, about 3, 4, possibly 5 add-ons for A600/A500 are NOT NECESSARY.

3. 1920*1080 OCS/ECS and AGA!!! 32 bit!!!! +RTG!

4. CPU + FPU + AMMX

5. Some 64 bit instructions!!!!

6. It's 100% SHINY & NEW. (Your AMIGAs are 20+ years old!!!)

7. LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF THE RAM!

8. FAST OFF! (Yes, that IS A DESIRABLE FEATURE!)

9. FAST ON!!!!

10. LOW POWER! (watt?)

!! HIGH POWER !!!!!!!!! (M.!.P.s)

p.s. all of the above, deliberately vague and that's the SHORT list

@Gunnar

One question regarding standalone from me...

if I understand right keyboard is attached by USB. What USB stack is used for it? I am only aware of Poseidon but Poseidon is still commercial on 3.X. There is Poseidon on Aros but that would be needed to be backported.

what concerns poseidon, the stack is available to download and open source available under aros, while the drivers for particular amiga hardware are commercial (boundled with this hardware) and closed source.

also there is a free, i think open source 68k low profile usb stack thats been daid to run on a plain a500, afaik. it should be available on aminet, but i have forgot its name and didnt hear anything about it since a while.

to make sense with vampire standalone hardware (available at boot time) the stack and the driver belongs in the kickstart (replacement?), in other words it shoould be romable, which aros version is, except nonexistant amiga hardware dirvers.

my guess is rather that the standalone mouse and keyboard will attach via ps2 interface.

If keyboard and mouse are connected via USB, my guess would be that there will be a translation from USB to legacy mouse/keyboard inside the core. Otherwise nothing would work in non-OS-friendly software. And, as we know, such software plays a major role in the Amiga software library...

you are right. the input hardware needs somehow to be mapped to the genuine register addresses i guess. that means wthatever kind of ports are going to be used for this, they need to be exclusively meant for input devices. other than that, like massstorage can be handled by a separate usb stack.

i wonder how is this to be solved elegantly.

Today you can transmit serial over USB.

Sure - will you provide onboard USB-RS232 adapter so that one only need a "android cable", like many embedded boards do, to do romwhack etc?

And today you connect printers with USB.

Huh, no.

Printers are online - even my mom has printer that is on wifi and also accepts printouts over bluetooth.

And the standalone comes with Ethernet port.
So even your mom is now happy.

Cool, how will it be implemented? Needing a dedicated SANA2 driver, or does it appear as well known and supported device on "the zorro bus"?

This is how I use ethernet on Amiga these days :)

It will mimic some standard ethernet device for which legacy drivers are available.
