The core is updated, is ApolloOS updated? Or are the fixes for that related to the core?

That is the final for ApolloOS R7, though it's always possible small updates may come between now and R8.

Nothing R7 specific in terms of ApolloOS that I'm aware of. Should work fine with core R6.

you dont need to do that you can flash from in ApolloOS or Coffin. you only need to do it that way if it messes up.

The core updater in Apollo OS 6.11 prompts for a .exe file. So is this a blaster only update? Or am I missing something obvious?

It can take a bit longer for the exe to becom availeble.
In the mean time, its there, togeter  with a new release of apollo os 7.1
