Amazing....I'm buying both of them..I want my order delivered in the 1st batch...

This happens all the time in the tech world. You buy something, and then not too much later, a newer model comes out. It's a fact of life.

They call it Product Evolution...more power, more features, better software... its amazing to see this happening on the classic platform in 2021....

Hi Michael,

If you’re still able to use the Paula audio on the motherboard as well as RGB and the internal floppy drive then that would suggest that, yes, you can use the Amiga’s own chipset. And no doubt you’ll also be able to use your motherboards IDE, PCMCIA, serial, parallel and external floppy ports as well.

Its very hard to answer with YES and NO on a question where both options are valid.

The OR is logically wrong in your question.

Having the chipset in the card does NOT exclude using the Amiga chipset on the mainboard. You can have both.

Lets make a more simple example for you.
The indivision in fact uses parts Minimig chipset to recreate picture of the Amiga. When you use the indivision can you still use Amiga chipset - yes you can.

Thanks for clarification.

Is this the same FPGA that's used in the current V1200, or a larger one, as used in the V4SA?

Firebird and Icedrake both use the larger FPGA as in the V4 (80KLE)

can i ask roughly, what the performance difference is, between a V2 and a V4 based card?

thanks

Hi Gunnar, Let me ask this as someone who shares the opposite view as Michael and prefers to have OCS,ECS and AGA / RTG to be over DIGITAL-VIDEO (like the V4SA does now) and has no need to use the original analog rgb/scart output on the amiga and would actually prefer to get rid that connection,. this also will be possible as well? I dont mind the original custom chips being fully replaced by their updated FPGA counterparts.. Would be nice to add modes like AGA and PAL display modes to my NTSC locked A500 that never originally had them as well as breaking the 512kb chip ram barrier that its currently hard-locked into by the old ntsc agnus and rev5 mobo design (its not an a500+)(I know many A1000 owners feel this pain as well). Booting from floppies is irrelevant to me as we have WHDLOAD and I do not really need parallel or serial ports. So can we interpret this as a possible yes as well?

I'm curious about the V1200 path as I own the V600-II and V1200 regarding native Amiga video output.
This has been the major drawback for me all the time, because I'm so used to my A3000 and A4000 where switching between RTG and AGA happens automatically.

Does the introduction of the IceDrake mean that the V1200 never will get native Amiga video output?

This is not will we ever get a V3 core question, more will support and improvements continue for the existing v2 cards.

The A1200 cards have not long been produced and would hope that bug fixes will continue ?

For V500/V600 no major updates are planned right now.
Also as the FPGA on the V500 and V600 are very full major updates are very difficult.

For V1200 for the near future 2 main updates are planned:
  - game compatibility fixes
  - Apollo Shield Support is planned

We will make a roadmap for the longer future.

@Gunnar

it is maybe a naive question to ask to you as the developer and producer of the new cards, but is there any major reason for me as a V1200 user to switch to the new cards?

I am pretty much satisfied and if you keep the promises about the bugfixes i'll have the perfect accelerator card for my a1200.
As i am a big fan of emulators like SNES or GnNeo, i wonder if its realistic to expect a V1200 to perform well enough for those tasks.
100MBit ethernet sounds nice though, but when it comes to ARNE, i wonder if the audio output will only be put out through DIGITAL-VIDEO or also the amiga audio jacks?
AFAIK there are pins for audio in/out on the Trapdoor connector of the A1200.

Will the onboard IDE of the A1200 still work after installing the IceDrake?

The IceDrake is today still in layout phase.
The current plan for IceDrake is to have 2 very fast controllers on itself - just like the Firebird has.

Whether its better to have 2 very fast controllers with DMA etc.
or 2 fast and 1 slow controller in the system ... we will need to evaluate when the card is done.

The V1200 is a very solid card.
And thanks to the performance of the 68080 CPU it outclasses every other accelerator.
I think many people are very happy with its performance.

The 68080 has in theory more than enough raw power.
As always the performance of such software does depend a lot on the "quality" of the tuning and "quality" of the coding.

In other words NEOGEO loading time depends on bad coding.
With rewrite this part NEOGEO could load games 5-10 times faster.
Also the emulation and game performance of both could be improved.

If you can motivate coders to help tune them, maybe a bounty?
Then getting them significantly faster is possible.

Audio will come over DIGITAL-VIDEO on the IceDrake and in addition port to connect an extra DAC is planned.

with VAT added, the A1200 card will be 540 Euro. for UK buyers. although the VAT preorders on the page, doesnt give a price, just XXXX

that's really getting up there in price.

How much faster than a V1200 is the new card?

I noticed on the pre-order page that the Kraken is also listed. Is that the card for the Amiga 4000?

Ich schreibe das mal auf Deutsch. Warum keine V4 für den Amiga 600? Immerhin war es der Amiga 600 mit der Vampire 2, der euch den Anfangserfolg gebracht hat. Ich bin da sehr enttäuscht von euch.
