Apollo Team commitment to AROS 68k development

As we believe that AROS 68k is the only real alternative to the AmigaOS licensing limbo, Apollo Team decided to show a strong commitment to the AROS team by helping them to develop AROS 68k.

For each future Vampire Standalone sale done, Apollo Team will put aside 5 to fund AROS 68k project, being redistributed directly by rewarding AROS 68k developers or bringing them complete Vampire Standalone systems (board, case, PSU, keyboard, mouse, etc.).

If you are one of them, get in touch with us for details.

A dual boot Coffin/Aros will be awesome!

+1 very good! this goes in the right direction

and you are right Aros is the only open source alternative to the, you call it so nicely, "AmigaOS licensing limbo" ;-)

Seems you guys had it enough with Thomas Richter, didn't you... :D

Great!  Cheap AmigaOS-like alternative to OS 3.1/3.5/3.9.

Cannot wait!!

Glad my 5e will go there!

Long, long ago, C=USA kind of promised the same for AROS x64. but failed to act accordingly.

Could the "system and board" bounty be extended to game and software developers (e.g. Amiga Wave, Bosch Author, YAM author, Dopus 5 porters etc.)

Shouldn't all the 68k software ideally  run anyway on Aros68K?

Its matter of software development for AOS 3.x not AROS 68k alone and its ports. Point is: similar offering should be made to advance software and make it use 080-AMMX feats. Hardware to developers first - AROS is a great move, but more can be done.

Yes, most of AOS 3.x apps should run fine, but native is native.

What do you mean with native here?

Aros 68k running on 68k hardware feels like 3.1 if seen from software because it is implementing the 3.1 API

The only different component is Zune, MUI replacement. Compatibility always was very important. You can replace Zune with MUI but then the desktop must be independent (like it is the case with Magellan). AMMX and such are currently hardcoded asm, not related to Aros or 3.1. Of course it would be good if Aros would be optimized for Vampire or general amiga hardware.

Native AROS 68k app using Zune and its version of AHI etc., not relying on any additional 68k AOS 3.x software or libs.

I hope that is the goal of support, alongside pushing AROS 68k to be updated as latest aros x64 incl. rudimentary SMP. Together with your "Vision additional jampack" it could be a great alternative, even defaultOS.

Zune is basically MUI so I personal would say better improve Zune to make it fully compatible to MUI 3.8. Of course still you can add more features but there are not many applications using that features today.

SMP for what? SMP breaks amiga software and there is no multicore 68k hardware today

Olaf is 100% right.

AROS 68K needs to be 100% OS 3 compatible.
This is a big enough task.
All 68k programs need just run.
And AROS WB needs not be much slower than OS 3 - then the world is great.

Asking for other stuff like SMP makes no sense at all.
Focus needs be put on the important stuff and that this working 100% correct.

Yes, its either "lower then MUI" - Zune It!
  or add MUI4/5 compatibility.

To me, many important late OS 3.x software uses MUI 3.8, some newer some MUI 4/5 (e.g. Hoolywood, Ibrowse 2.5)

SMP in x64 does not break compatibility to x64 AROS apps. Same would be for m68k AROS apps (Native apps) so I vote for them too. It can be done as sandboxing, multithreading etc. In Vampire case it does not have to be backport - seeing some Vamp feats like 64-bit instructions etc. would be great.

Lets say "Advanced feats unseen in OS 3.x" - ScalOS included, QT, Posedion, Gallium ...

Power2People shows some, but most of its bounties were x86/x64 (AROS Kickstart was great!)

Agreed first priority is to make it optimized and smooth. What is next then? Further vamp optimization? However, in long term AROS x64 SMP is only SMP hope ever done.

I agree.  This seems rather pointless.  There are more achievable goals to be done which will be far more beneficial.  I would be happy just to have a working AROS (kickstart and Desktop).  SMP seems a bit of a pipe dream right now.

Great! Please offer possibility (via retailers) to add an extra donation of 5 Euros (or any other, individual amount) for those who are willing to contribute more!

Never said now, but as one of late "to be done". 080 was multithreaded and could be easily multicored. This needs software support.
Once 080 goes dual core or multithreaded, old OS 3.x software could be sandboxed per task as thread (every box seen as old exclusive) or simply emulated via optimized JIT-UAE 68k if only option. Works like charm in AEROS with Janus.

Agreed, willing to give more and see it done faster (at least basic SDcard bootable RTG 040Fpu port with later 080 optimizations)
