Emphasis on "something like apt". His suggestion isn't so ridiculous.  It isn't the first time this question has been asked and certainly won't be the last.  After years of being treated to well managed and often curated internet based software stores on Ubuntu and the like, it is almost painful to go back to the old days of manually searching Aminet for the right software and resolving, by hand, all dependencies then applying various patches or CPU specific versions of executables and libraries as well as handling startup script manipulation and.....well there are some challenges.  This are elegantly wrapped up in package management under Linux today.  Why not on the Amiga too?

At a glance the key challenges are not simply which package manager or repository architecture to adopt but more who will go to the effort of putting all of that software (from Aminet?) into the repository and package format?  Who will test that this mechanism works robustly and amend it where it doesn't.  Linux Distros are constructed such to take all of these challenges into account.  The Amiga OS, not so much.  Not unsolvable by any means but there is much work to be done there.

To bring this back to topic (AROS), perhaps we should first wait to see if AROS solidifies as the default OS for Vampire users and then see if we can't solve it, at least partially, within the OS itself.  That said, it is probably to early to speculate about this now.  There are far more important problems.

I believe that the short term future, be it based on AROS or not, will be coffin shaped.

While APT works, not a big fan. Like the Debian solution, but why not having our own.

I vote not to use Aminet but to start with AROS Exec or file depot dedicated and tested (on Vamps) AROS native software. Brings much less dependencies and pain then to husstle with OS 3.x stuff, esp. if we start with AROS Vision / AROS one.

OS 3.x can be dependency "free" by having Coffin/AmiKit XE style distro, so its also always an option. There is sort of AmiUpdate OS 3.x in AmiKit that does work.

  Would gladly take both.

Let Linux be Linux, and bring that 080 Linux Kernel as separate thing, with all things Penguin :)

Exactly... I don't care which one we model it after, they all work more or less the same way be it APT, or python's PIP or RPM or whatever...

In general they all do the following:

1) have a repository with a master index of all packages and all versions stored there.
2) every package has some sort of XML description document with a specific name inside it that gives it a name, a version number, and a list of all dependencies for this package with minimum version number.
3) Each package lists every file produced/installed and where it goes as part of this package.
4) the installer/uninstaller knows how to build and walk the dependency tree, so when you say "I want to install X, it grabs X, looks at the file specified in #2, sees that it depends on Y and in turn sees that Y depends on Z, it knows to pull all 3, install them in reverse order.
5) a local manager that keeps track of which packages were installed and how many packages depend on each other such that if a package has been orphaned (ie, nobody depends on a given package) it can be removed without impact. Likewise the ability to detect if a previously installed dependency has been broken though an uninstall at a later time.

Yeah somebody would have to go and start updating packages to include all those things to make them compatible with this new package manager, but I think once it starts getting some traction, others would naturally jump in and help out as they find more and more that they'd want to be controlled through the manager.

Just be glad we aren't trying to agree on a single build system! (One of my biggest pet peeves about Linux- every damn "build from source" package uses it's own build system that have dependencies... WTF was really wrong with good old MAKE? No, we have to have MAKE, NMAKE, CMAKE, auto tools, Catkin-Make, Catkin-Build, etc. ARGH!)

For each future Vampire Standalone sale done, Apollo Team will put aside 5€ to fund AROS 68k project, being redistributed directly by rewarding AROS 68k developers or bringing them complete Vampire Standalone systems (board, case, PSU, keyboard, mouse, etc.).

Are Amiga Show sales enough to fund one SA or V1200 for Kalametee?
I suppose that could mean further support.

AROS Deveopers are talking about debugging the boot process for AROS 68k. The person that knows the most is @Kalamatee but he needs hardware to test the boot process. He has an old a1200 that may or may not work. He needs a donation of an Amiga with a new vampire.
Just thought I would mention that.

well, we were exactly talking this if im allowed to disclose.

edit:
afair apollo team has proposed to donate v1200 to nick, but probably since its delayed nothing happened so far. perhaps standalone would do as well, but this all isnt for me to tell.

As soon as possible, I am sure we will see/feel the results.
In Amiga land, patience is needed virtue. A CD install, Net install or simpler way to install and boot AROS beside AmigaOS would be most welcome, beside fixing the boot.

If you (Aros crew) could take a look into some sort of installer for aos 3.x/coffin that could create small Aros partition, copy files AND create some sort of RDB-LILO or Vampire boot (github) aos boot menu, that would be great for laisy generations.

Could be used on all classics too.

Or of proper image partition and boot menu could be included with Coffin.

I AM sure there Are multiple ways to skin a cat.

With emuTOS they included fire button or similar boot to. Maybe holding rmb to Enter Cat world of floss?

aros does not need installation so far. it has an install script though, which might be taken care of. first things first though. we have certain members fixing small issues one after the other currently.

Fully understandable. But, something like "SelectOS" would be great

Huge progress with 68k AROS towards the end of 2019. Thank you AROS-team!

193 MIPS is awesome power!

ON first glance I did not see it but
the ugly mouse pointer and the names in the list of Kickstart modules reveals that SYSINFO runs on AROS.

I guess a few people will ask themselves the same question I am asking: what huge progress in AROS was necessary to run Sysinfo on it?

It couldn't calculate correct results until PAL frequency values were fixed in AROS ROM (it also affected to the HippoPlayer, etc). But this is just one update among many fixes: EXTERNAL LINK

Its great to see small fixes that make life easier (and AROS more AOS 3 compatible).

its not just small fixes. implementing that palette per screen functionality and now also finishing up palette prefs was a load of code and commits. just as example. now also looks like vampire hidd has been started.. interesting progress to be seen, i cant actually follow testing.

btw the v600 is booting again, almost..

Great news!
Seems like things are moving along on the AROS side.
