unfortunately the current status of aros is that it doesn't boot on vampire (again). at least that was the status last time ive checked few weeks ago. i have taken a test system on a trip but having spent countless hours on this before and having a lot of other work couldn't get around to work on it since then.

Cmon Wawa :) Could porting some parts of SAGA drivers help both boot and GUI speed?

Surely, some special archive of some nighty or less nighty :) build will be made :)

There is/was Vampire boot tool with open source for dual boot and even SD Card boot purposes

I'm not Trolling, and i'm not being intentionally obtuse, but i don't really get the point of AROS? can someone help me out and understand what's going on? I've had a quick look at the website, and while the effort and talent to do something like this is awesome, i'm still not seeing it?

i mean, we have the core OS already, why go to the time and effort of replicating the OS3 API and binary functionality. Is it just to go open source? does it also avoid legal entanglements?

if someone could do some dummies guide bullet points that'd help.

many thanks :)

To my understandment all this is due to Workbench and System ROM copyrights being somewhat "obscure" at the moment.

So AROS should be a solution to this, being a free replacement

OS 3 saga was a mess since CD32 debacle and CBM demise. OS 3.5 and OS 3.9 are more patch collections then really a new OS. Copyright was changing owners with no one really working on AmigaOS - and those who did (Hype) changed it to PPC and take even more lightyears to advance a bit.

So idea was born: reverse engeneer all AOS 3.1 functionality, but so its fully independent from any (c) owner and open sourced - an opossite approach. And it was done with AROS, even MUI replacement (Zune) and AHI/RTG were done.

Linux style versatility was introduced so AROS is only amigaos successor that has "multiarch" - works on m68k, PPC,intel 386 and AMD64 archs.

But its far from perfect, it never really gone much stronger then plain oS 3.1+ as main distro. Jampacks like AEROS or AROS Vision try to blend 3rd party AROS s/w to create AmiKit like experience or Linux distro experience to certain degree.

And its free.

I love spirit of small projects, like Power2People where small bounties push limits. So complete KS replacement was done.

going aros has a number of advantages:
1. among others its being open and free of charge, or rather a charge being a voluntary option.
2. as pointed out it is a safe harbor allowing for not distracted factual commitment, rather than an actual  stage for keyboard fighters.
3. it steers clear of the legality issues that will always remain a problem with the genuine which has been apparently left in the wild for way too long to really keep track of its deeds, and successively became a playground of all imaginable handicaps and confronting approaches to ever get free of these.
4. aros is equipped with permissive license allowing for forks, so as long as one person cares or he source remains downloadable it is still accessible to resume a further development (along with its history), making it (among others) an ideal preservation option. other amiga offshoots do not provide this.
5. aros provides an agnostic abstracted platform, allowing for ports to whatever seems suitable, architecture switches or extensions by design. this is particularly important in context of apollo core. neither genuine amigaos nor apparently os4 or morphos provide this.
6. aros provides easies options to port and implement open source based drivers and software (mostly linux and bsd) out of the box.
7. aros proivides an uncounted number of improvable extensions in comparison to genuine 3.x as well as to other ng alternatives. it has lan, usb, rtg subsystems built in, just to name a few.
8. skeletons for implementation of futher feature are freely available.,.
9. now im tired to list even a fraction of it again and again. go educate yourself if it suits you.

Hello Wawa,

you are 100% right.
Aros has a lot of advantages.
Aros is also advanced and ahead of AMIGA OS 3.1... in many areas.

If AROS is 100% compatible and some performance limits are brushed up then AROS is indeed an awesome AMIGA OS.

Kudos, great tech exponation, my brain could not count these :)

And Vamp could also be the first system beside x86 AresOne that had AROS or fork as default OS.

YYEESS! YEEESS! I HAVE TRIED AROS VISION ON WINUAE AND MAN IT FEELS 99% LIKE REAL AMIGA OS....AND IT WORKS...AND AND...AAAAAAAAAAH AND IT HAVE ALL THE SPIRIT AND MAGIC OF ORIGINAL AMIGA OS 68K!!

YESSS! If Vampire and I mean IF Vampire is shipped as default with AROS and it is compatibility to whdload games is at 60% and in future will improve to 99%....I may never return back to AmigaOS 68k.

One should count how much software and abilities one gains (Aros Vision) as opposed to plain OS 3.1,OS 3.1.4, even OS 3.5 or OS 3.9.

More then AmigaOS a bit less then Coffin :=)

coffin is amigaos as far as im aware, just repackaged with applied fixes and micro optimisations. there is no comparison in the amount of work neccessary to stem an effort from scratch as it has been in aros as well as in potentially open advantages as aros comes with an own full compilable and legal source at disposal, while coffin cannot provide that.

if coffin had a clarified legal state, i could probably call it distribution. as it is id probably rather call 3.1.4 a valid  slightly fixed alternative in comparison with the genuine 3.x or simply take 3.9. saying that none of these provides a set of featueres comparable to aros if fixed properly.

coffin is amigaos as far as im aware,

He speaks about the "Distribution"
He says that "A naked OS 3.0 Workbench is less than AROS"
But the polished appearance of "COFFIN looks a more than AROS"

yes including lots of pirated software

makes it easy to make a distribution ;)

I will try to do a more polished version as soon I know Aros is running on Vampire and is speedy enough to be useful

I would not bet that Coffin is bigger than Aros Vision

But I had the "problem" to do it legally whereas whoever did coffin just integrated what he wanted without any need to get permissions, something that needs lot of efforts. There are programs I own private and would like to integrate too but cannot unfortunately

Danke Olaf,
This sounds like a great idea.

Shall we work together on this?

Aros is a whole OS and includes many components that are not existing or only third party on 3.1

As a simple example RTG-support

Perhaps you have read all the discussions around legality to use P96 on Vampire and the new owner who obviously calculated license fees from vampire sales. The other alternative is the same, owned by someone from morphos team without any support on 68k. On Aros you have a free CybergraphX implementation that only needs a driver. And you have network stack, USB support (poseidon), AHI, MUI as a free implementation, themeing, you can move windows out of the screen, MESA/Gallium (on 68k working but too slow)

yes why not

but first it should be tested/optimized to work fast enough

and of course there has to be tested what desktop should be used. My personal favorite is magellan because it has most features but I cannot judge how it is on vampire

@olaf if you do make a vamped AROS, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use a different set of default icons.. those that come with AROS are for lack of a better word .. hideous .. I know they are there to serve as place holders but man, they are very hard on the eyes.. Please use something that is way more pleasing, I know we have a ton of people in this community that pride themselves on creating seductive and sexy Amiga desktops and icons.. Please ask them for help if needed .. lets really knock this out of the park.. :-D  // and thank you for taking this task on.. I honestly think AROS is **the** way for the Vampire..
