I agree.  This seems rather pointless.  There are more achievable goals to be done which will be far more beneficial.  I would be happy just to have a working AROS (kickstart and Desktop).  SMP seems a bit of a pipe dream right now.

Never said now, but as one of late "to be done". 080 was multithreaded and could be easily multicored. This needs software support.
Once 080 goes dual core or multithreaded, old OS 3.x software could be sandboxed per task as thread (every box seen as old exclusive) or simply emulated via optimized JIT-UAE 68k if only option. Works like charm in AEROS with Janus.

Agreed, willing to give more and see it done faster (at least basic SDcard bootable RTG 040Fpu port with later 080 optimizations)

Better to doe this asymmetrically in user-land. We can add the "extra cores/threads" as a resource that tasks can allocate and fork on their own with no interference from AmigaOS/AROS.

This is great news. Why make Vampire dependent on Hyperion that proven very little as OS developer. Not only is AROS free, but also open source and can always be developed and modified. We will soon see new standalone hardware for classic 68k together with open source OS, AROS. It is like a new, fresh start. No need for older hardware or software. 5 bucks can be quite a lot if selling hundreds of units. I think Vampire should raise price with 5 bucks more to support software development. So much talent that need to be supported or might get lost.
Some Amiga devs. are involved in the Uridium remake and if I where Apollo Team I would get in contact with them and try to make a version for Vampire. Things like this would sell lot's of Vampires.

I love AROS a lot...same love as the AmigaOS and to be honest it is the closet to AmigaOS as possible without the necessary legality and in additional to that...YOU CAN ENJOY all the fun things the AmigaOS offers into AROS. Large icons sitting beside tiny icon, not clicked, clicked icon frames for the icon...an icon editor like AmigaOS, ram DISK, everything that makes Amiga great is already in AROS.

Having to optimize AROS to be as light and fast AmigaOS is great step to success and having it as the default OS for V4 and any future Vampire is truly the smartest step and way to go!!

Zune is even better than MUI and more complex and powerful than MUI and more stable too. Personally? For me? I wouldn't mind have a full functioning working AROS as default on V4 and I would not change it for anything else and have AROS ROM flashed into the V4 itself. So if there are no media or readable devices you will see the AROS kickstart screen instead of the AmigaOS kickstart screen. We can even have animated hard drive instead of inserting disk into floppy or animated CD.

This is good news because it seems that everything Hyperion touches turns to sh#t.  This is the same approach that A-Eon should have taken years ago with the funding of a PPC branch of AROS, maybe they will someday.  The more distance that everyone can put between themselves and Hyperion, the better.

Err... not unless you're using new math. :)

However, providing hardware for development and testing, Vampire expertise and bringing attention to the OS is an important first step.

I agree a 100%! AROS is the way to go by distancing ourselves from Hyperion.

Vampire is not an Amiga/Commodore trademark so they cannot touch us by using the name Amiga because we are using the name Vampire.

Hardware is indie build and not using any Commodore components.

The ROM will be AROS which have no relation whatsoever between Amiga/Commodore and them...as AROS is like Linux or any other open source OS....so as far as legality is concerned..Vampire is not Amiga.

Therefore Hyperion is powerless in any legality whatsoever. The only legality they can have over us if we want to use WHDLoad game and they say you must buy your ROM version to use it with whdload and that is about it. But then again that can only be done if we are using 3.1.4 ROM which we are not. Sooooo.....

Just as a correction, I think you mean "Cloanto" and not "Hyperion"....

AFAIK the cores all currently use a 3.1 ROM licensed by Cloanto. If Hyperion were to win in court and get control of the Kickstart ROM supply market it could be a problem going forward. The team would have no choice but to either switch to licensing from Hyperion or using AROS ROMs with all previous board registrations (ie. all sales) being in limbo.

AROS 68k is in a bit of a catch 22 situation. Without a large installed base of AROS 68k users, interest in developing it is probably limited and without development it's not attractive as a default option for new hardware. Hopefully more funding for AROS 68K will lead to the improvements needed for it to be considered for use as the default/first releases of new cores (with OS3.1 cores available later as an alternative install until they can be phased out completely).

Regarding user impact;

Coffin OS became popular due to the userfriendliness of the download and burn ISO method. Something similar would go a long way of getting many Vampire users to make the switch.

You know what I would like to see in CoffinOS?

Is a new type installer in C folder. This installer is smart enough that it checks the program for any missing libraries, third party installation, etc that it obtains it through online before completing the installation of the actual program. This way it prevents the user to go through a hundred thousand places to download and install the independence to run the app/game.

No, its a forced solution of making "Amiga backup" with a lot of tweaks and software.

I yet prefer clean install with lot of extras option selectable (e.g. Advanced Linux installs).

Its not Linux with a lot of dependencies. Too bad needed libs were not always included with software.

Coffin has update mechanism, it just need dedicated server.

Similar mechanism like in OS4 or Grunch could be employed.

Yes, lets discount a proven success.

And there could be a clean install and "Coffinlike" version.

there is an associated installer replacement project we have included in our wip aros68k distribution. being open source it can obviously be upgraded with premium features..

unfortunately the current status of aros is that it doesn't boot on vampire (again). at least that was the status last time ive checked few weeks ago. i have taken a test system on a trip but having spent countless hours on this before and having a lot of other work couldn't get around to work on it since then.

I can't even figure out how to get AROS working on FS-UAE (mac)... Pulled it down, unzipped, pointed the emulator at the basic and extended roms, set the memory high and CPU to 68060. Tried with and without RTG board emulation (tried several different options).

Usually it'll start booting and then I'll get what looks sort of like a dialog box containing something similar to a GURU message and then it immediately reboots over and over... Doesn't even stay on screen long enough for me to read what it says...

if you try the nightly from aros page you will need to add arosbbotstrap command at the beginning of the startup-sequence, for instance like that (pointing to your ks images and rtg drivers:

boot/amiga/AROSBootstrap ROM boot/amiga/aros.hunk.gz boot/amiga/PicassoIV.card boot/amiga/CirrusGD5446.chip

EXTERNAL LINK
other than that you might want to get hold of our images at amigaports. though i need to figure out how to access them myself..

I think the important aspect to consider is that Hyperion or Cloanto would charge a similar amount per Vampire if it were to be sold with a preconfigured Workbench (and not only with a legacy ROM that can be downloaded in a million places). Why let that money go into a closed-source black-hole and contributing in this way to keeping Amiga in the legal stranglehold if you could invest it into an open-source alternative instead?
